Many rural lines still retain the need for fuel-powered traction, and since the turn of the century, the DB BR 642 has been a common sight. Ordered in the 1990s, the BR 642 is a 2-car DMU designed to be operated on local routes, featuring an innovative low floor and boarding design for increased accessibility, and mounted upon a shared bogie to improve safety and ride quality. All while, the low floor also gives the 642 its distinctive large windows for ultimate scenic viewing.

Alongside the railcar is another familiar sight on diesel lines, the BR 363 shunter, rolling along with wagons in-tow to deliver all manner of goods.
