About Berserkers

Berserkers - about the game

Berserkers is an action indie game for PC that centers on precise movement and high-stakes combat in a Norse-inspired world. Players control a warrior equipped with two ropes and a single axe, navigating arenas across seven distinct realms while facing enemies of varying sizes and aggression levels. The core loop revolves around using the ropes for traversal and positioning, then landing accurate strikes on enemy weak points to end fights quickly rather than through attrition.

Gameplay

The movement system forms the foundation of every encounter. Each hand fires a rope independently. Holding both creates a pendulum swing for controlled momentum, releasing one shifts into an arc, and dropping the second sends the player into free fall. Reeling pulls the character straight toward the hooked point at high speed, turning the ropes into a primary tool for closing distance or escaping danger. This mechanic layers on top of all other systems, making positioning a constant factor in survival and offense.

Combat emphasizes a single axe and targeted strikes on an enemy's heart. A clean hit there defeats any foe regardless of size. The timing window remains narrow, so success depends on reaching the right angle rather than outlasting opponents through repeated hits. Body strikes deal partial damage and require three times the effort to finish a kill. Misses or poor positioning force players to adapt quickly using the ropes to reposition for another attempt.

Blessings add temporary trade-offs drawn two at a time during a match. More than sixty options exist, each exchanging one capability for another. Examples include losing reel speed in exchange for carrying extra tank capacity, throwing a shield like a projectile at the cost of a protective bubble, or shrinking the character to become harder to hit while disabling aim assist. These effects last only for the current run and reset afterward, keeping every session focused on immediate decisions rather than long-term progression.

Game Modes

Several modes test different aspects of the rope and axe systems. Holmgang pits one player against another in a first-to-five-rounds duel with no cover available. Warbands divides four players into Aesir and Jotnar teams for five-minute matches. Gjallarhorn requires carrying a horn to score points while every other participant tries to stop the holder. The Hunt supports up to four players defending a ward against continuous enemy waves. Boss encounters feature large targets such as Jormungandr beneath a frozen mere and Fenrir on Lyngvi. Fridr offers a calmer experience in Alfheim with eighteen rings to collect and a long descent, free from hostile pursuit.

The seven realms provide varied backdrops that influence movement and visibility. These include a black forest in Vanaheim, the interior of a mountain in Muspelheim, the rainbow bridge in Asgard leading to an island and Odin's seat, a frozen mere in Niflheim, the bound wolf on Lyngvi, a holm in Midgard, and the long light of Alfheim where threats are absent.

Rewards and Progression

Players earn titles, ropes, winds, cloaks, and crests through play. Twenty-four titles and forty-one cosmetic items unlock over time. None of these provide combat advantages. The design keeps rewards strictly visual, preserving balance across all sessions and preventing power creep from affecting matches.

Is It Worth Playing?

Berserkers suits players who enjoy skill-focused action games where movement precision and split-second decisions determine outcomes. The rope system creates a distinct feel compared to standard shooters or melee titles, rewarding practice with fluid traversal and aggressive positioning. Modes range from competitive duels to cooperative wave defense and solo exploration, offering variety without requiring permanent upgrades. As a solo-developed project, the game emphasizes core mechanics over expansive features, and the developer has indicated willingness to refine it based on feedback. Those seeking challenging, trade-off heavy combat in a compact package will find the systems rewarding, while players preferring loot-driven progression or large-scale campaigns may want to try the available modes first to gauge the pace.
