Beyond the Mortal Gate is a story-driven xianxia RPG featuring a built-in local language model, blending free-form AI conversation and social causality with classic martial-arts roleplaying.
Starting in Qingxi Village, you will investigate an eight-year family mystery, train under local masters, and live among villagers who remember, talk, and act on their own terms.
Talk in Your Own Words—and Get Real Things Done
Alongside authored story choices, you can speak freely with villagers in your own words: ask about old secrets, negotiate to borrow a wooden sword, commission a craftsman to mend gear, offer a meal, or ask someone to put in a good word for you.In Qingxi, a polite reply in chat is not the same as a done deal:
- Every villager has their own coins, inventory, schedule, and relationships. Whether they agree or refuse depends on what they know, how they feel about you, and what rules the world enforces.
- Commissioning gear requires real materials—hardwood or hide—and waiting for the villager to actually travel and finish the job. Earning a master's treasured skill book takes proven trust, real help, and their genuine consent.
- Borrowed items, monthly promises, and lost belongings you find on the road all leave real traces in inventories and relationships.
A Village Where Word Travels—and Causes Leave Traces
No villager in Qingxi is omniscient. People know only what they have seen with their own eyes or heard from someone else. What you do with one person can ripple through the village:
- An In-Game Example: Give food to your old classmate Chen Mo, and she may mention your kindness when speaking with Aunt Chen. Hearing it secondhand, Aunt Chen won't simply hand out a reward—she may first decide to seek out Chen Mo in person to verify whether it's true.
- Track What You've Uncovered: Instead of taking every spoken promise at face value, you can revisit villagers and check your character records to see where a piece of news came from, who witnessed it, and whether a promised task is queued, underway, interrupted, or refused.
An Eight-Year Trail Meets a Sudden Crisis
You are Lin Chen. For eight years, you have searched for the truth behind your parents' disappearance. Then the village creek turns black overnight. A-Xiu unpacks contaminated medicine she can no longer sell, dipping into the savings she kept for a shop counter to refund her neighbors. Your old classmate Chen Mo re-measures the river with her bamboo rule and finds it no longer matches the old map. Upstream, carved stones that may hold a clue to your family are being loaded onto carts, while workers speak of unpaid wages.
Rush after the stone cart, or stay to help the people beside you? You have your reasons—and so do they.
More Than One Way Through the Pass
Whether facing a guarded mountain pass or a perilous old canal, brute force is only one option:- Investigate and Negotiate: Gather water samples, compare maps, verify unpaid wage ledgers, and rally allies before heading up the mountain. At the first pass, securing a sample and withdrawing alive is a victory in itself.
- Multiple Solutions: When retrieving lost gear above a wolf-prowled canal, you can tie a rope to bypass the danger, use footwork martial arts you've learned to cross a narrow ledge, ask a companion to spot a path, or break the enemy's stance in combat to grab the pack and retreat.
Train Under Masters and Build Your Five-Move Loadout
Study under three village masters. Help with their work and prove yourself by winning battles with their signature techniques to learn their inner arts in person.Combat revolves around a five-move loadout, action points, Qi, and enemy intent: read your opponent's next move, break their stance, brace and counter, or chain attacks into a finisher. Test your setup on the training post before setting out, and fight alongside A-Xiu, who uses her own medicine pouch to heal you in battle.
Built-in Local AI Model—Play Out of the Box
- Included Local Model: Runs directly on your PC with no external account required and no per-message fees.
- Optional Remote Providers: You may also configure supported remote LLM endpoints in the settings (when using a remote service, your inputs and relevant context are sent to that provider and may incur their standard charges).
- Clear Boundaries: The main story, quest conditions, combat, and item exchanges are strictly governed by game rules. AI villagers can refuse requests, and responses take time to generate. Supports Simplified Chinese and English text.
