About Cartbonkers

Cartbonkers - about the game

Cartbonkers is a single-player 2D arcade action game set in a bustling supermarket where the simple task of grabbing groceries turns into a high-pressure contest of steering, collisions, and careful item management. Players control a shopping trolley through aisles filled with rivals who attempt to disrupt progress, all while building a load from a rotating catalog of items and racing toward the checkout lanes.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on navigating four supermarket departments to fulfill a shopping list drawn from a catalog of 300 groceries. Movement involves steering through turns, drifting to maintain speed, and executing well-timed frontal bonks on rival carts to trigger chain reactions that clear paths or score points. Side impacts disrupt momentum and break combos, so positioning matters as much as aggression. Fragile deliveries require extra care because damage forces a return trip for replacements, and repeated losses end the attempt.

Upgrades add variety and strategy. At set intervals players choose from three offers that include options such as bumpers, frying oil slicks, speed boosts, magnets, bubble wrap, and an air horn. Existing upgrades can be improved instead of taking new ones, encouraging different builds across runs. Collection phases allow drafting for quick power spikes, while campaign stages let players commit to a loadout in advance. At checkout the trolley can be maneuvered inside the scanning area, but leaving it causes scanning progress to drain, turning the final moments into another layer of spatial combat against encroaching rivals.

Game Modes

Two primary ways to play exist. Quick runs deliver short, self-contained shopping trips focused on immediate performance and high scores. The nine-stage campaign strings together progressively challenging scenarios that introduce new mechanics such as cold-chain bonuses, timed bargains, and boss encounters with distinct behaviors. Both modes support three difficulty levels that adjust pressure without changing core rules.

Skill contracts provide additional structure. Completing these unlocks three alternative trolleys, raises medal ranks, or activates tougher optional conditions for greater rewards. A saved campaign can be resumed from the current stage entrance, and configuration codes allow sharing of upgrade setups with others.

Progression and Customization

Local records track performance separately for each configuration, rewarding experimentation with different trolley and upgrade combinations. Six upgradable bonuses tie directly into the six categories mentioned in the upgrade pool, creating clear paths for specialization. Four carts total are available once unlocked through contracts, each presumably altering handling or capacity in subtle ways. Rebindable keyboard and gamepad controls support precise input, while English and Italian language options broaden accessibility.

For players interested in deeper customization, the game supports local JSON shopping scenarios. This system lets users modify run parameters without altering the base executable, opening the door to community-created variations while keeping the core arcade feel intact.

Is It Worth Playing?

Cartbonkers suits players who enjoy arcade-style action with light roguelike elements and a strong emphasis on spatial awareness and combo timing. The single-player focus keeps the experience consistent and self-paced, with quick runs serving as ideal entry points and the campaign offering longer sessions that reward mastery of upgrades and positioning. Skill contracts and multiple difficulties provide meaningful replay hooks without requiring online features or constant updates.

Those who appreciate precise controls, build experimentation, and a novel supermarket theme will find the mechanics rewarding. The inclusion of fragile item management and checkout pressure adds tension that distinguishes it from pure racing or brawler titles. Availability on PC with remappable inputs and bilingual support further lowers barriers for a wide range of players seeking a focused, original arcade package.
