DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Complete Edition Remastered is an action game that revives the 2001 original and its Xtreme Legends expansion in Unreal Engine 5. Players control officers from the Three Kingdoms era and fight through large-scale battles against hundreds of enemies at once. The remaster keeps the core loop of clearing waves of soldiers while managing officer abilities and battlefield objectives, now with updated visuals, refined controls, and added mechanics such as evasion and weapon synthesis.
Gameplay
Combat centers on stringing together normal attacks, charge attacks, and special moves to defeat groups of enemies quickly. Each of the more than 40 officers has unique weapon types and move sets that reward learning timing and positioning. True Musou Attacks serve as powerful finishers once the Musou gauge fills. Officer development carries over across sessions, letting players improve stats, equip items, and customize bodyguards that assist in battle. New additions include an evasion system that lets players dodge attacks and follow up with counter strikes, plus weapon synthesis that combines equipment for stronger results. Split-screen support allows two players to fight together or against each other on the same screen. Horses can be summoned for faster movement across the maps, and some parry mechanics appear during intense fights.
Game Modes
Musou Mode follows individual officer stories through a series of battles drawn from historical events, with several new scenarios added for the remaster. Completing specific conditions unlocks additional officers. Free Mode removes story restrictions so players can pick any officer and any battlefield for open-ended sessions. Challenge Mode offers timed or endurance-based trials that test kill counts, speed, or survival. VS Mode supports split-screen matches, including 3v3 duels at Hulao Pass and 1v1 naval battles at Chibi where the goal is to defeat a set number of soldiers first. Growth items and weapons obtained in any mode transfer to the others, encouraging repeated play across the full set of options.
Three Kingdoms Battles
The game recreates dozens of battlefields from the Three Kingdoms period with improved detail and scale. Officers from major factions such as Shu, Wei, and Wu lead forces against rival armies while completing tasks like defeating key targets or defending positions. The officer development system lets players build stronger characters over time, and bodyguard customization adds another layer of strategy to each encounter. New scenarios expand on the original stories for characters including Lu Bu, Meng Huo, and Yuan Shao.
Is It Worth Playing?
The remaster targets players who enjoy large-scale action combat and co-operative or competitive split-screen sessions. It preserves the foundational mechanics that defined the series, such as officer progression and simultaneous two-player support, while adding modern touches like evasion and weapon fusion. Those familiar with the original titles will find familiar structure alongside fresh content. Because the game launches with both the base game and Xtreme Legends content combined, it delivers a complete package of story-driven and free-form battles. Availability on Xbox Series X|S includes local co-op and versus options that suit couch play. Pre-order incentives like the retro-style Red Hare saddle provide an early visual option, though the standard Red Hare mount offers higher stats once unlocked through normal play.
