About Ensō: The Ink Spirit

Ensō: The Ink Spirit - about the game

Ensō: The Ink Spirit is an action indie casual game for PC in which players control Sumi, a drop of ink with a brush for a tail. The core loop centers on painting strokes across paper-like levels to seal yokai spirits by closing circles around them. Movement leaves a trail of wet ink that must be completed into a ring before it dries or gets interrupted by hazards such as paper cranes, lantern fire, crows, or lightning. Circles receive ratings of rough, fine, or perfect ensō, with the highest quality triggering a temple bell, tripling the score, and overcoming stronger enemies. Mid-stroke dashes grant temporary invulnerability to hazards.

Gameplay

Players move freely through hand-painted environments while managing ink that fades over time. Precise control determines circle quality, and chaining seals on groups of yokai builds multipliers. The brush tail mechanic encourages fluid paths that avoid cutting elements while enclosing targets. Twelve distinct worlds appear on a freely traversable map, each featuring unique environmental interactions such as festival lanterns bursting into fireworks, a moon pond that reflects circles, falling bamboo that damages yokai, or waves that erase ink strokes. Thirty-one yokai types drawn from Japanese folklore populate the levels, and sealing them populates a bestiary with accompanying stories.

Progression occurs through the painter's temple, which unlocks hall by hall to grant new brush spirits, lasting techniques, and a gallery for reviewing past runs. Eight ink colors become available through play, ranging from sumi black to shu red. Controls support mouse, keyboard, or controller, with accessibility options including gentle circle closing, reduced motion, and high contrast modes. Four difficulty settings scale from Gentle to Ichigo Ichie, the latter enforcing a single chance per run.

Game Modes

Pilgrimage functions as a roguelike campaign across five scrolls. After each wave players receive a technique card, and roadside shrines along with fortunes influence the run. Master strokes and five dan ranks appear on a leaderboard for competitive tracking.

Night Parade sends a procession of one hundred demons across the scroll. Techniques activate automatically while players attempt to encircle the entire parade in one stroke before dawn arrives.

Zen garden removes combat and time pressure entirely, focusing solely on brushwork and exploration without risk of failure.

Every completed run saves as a time-lapse painting in a personal gallery for later viewing or sharing.

Story and Setting

The narrative unfolds through picture scrolls known as emaki. The old painter Bokusai once sealed the land's spirits inside a great scroll, yet his final circle remained incomplete. Players embody the last drop of his ink and encounter twelve great spirits, including the Drumming Tanuki and Yamata no Orochi with its eight heads, plus a final Shadow of the Brush encounter. Each spirit delivers a haiku and reveals a painted memory of the painter's life. Choices about what to learn determine whether the last circle closes or stays open, shaping the ending.

Is It Worth Playing?

Ensō: The Ink Spirit suits players who enjoy precise single-player action with drawing mechanics and light roguelike elements. The verified modes offer distinct pacing options, from structured runs with progression cards to relaxed creative sessions. Environmental variety and folklore-inspired enemies provide consistent novelty across the twelve worlds. Accessibility features and multiple difficulty levels broaden the audience to those seeking either relaxed or high-stakes experiences. The gallery and ink unlocks reward repeated play without requiring external progression systems. Those drawn to Japanese-inspired themes, circle-drawing combat, and self-contained runs will find the mechanics and structure align directly with the described systems.
