About EXTERM

EXTERM - about the game

EXTERM is a co-op horror extraction game set in procedurally generated abandoned sites. Players take on contracts to loot valuables and eliminate marked threats before returning to the extraction van. Up to four participants coordinate through online sessions on PC, balancing scavenging with combat against hostile creatures that behave according to distinct patterns.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on dropping into a fresh location each time. Teams must meet a dual quota by collecting specific items and dealing with elite monsters that appear on the map. Regular enemies add pressure through varied behaviors, such as ambushes from shadows or deceptive appearances. Procedural generation rebuilds layouts, room placements, and item spawns for every run, preventing repetition or reliance on fixed routes.

Communication plays a central role. Proximity voice chat supports coordination, while radio and speaker systems allow players to relay information or create distractions. An interactable terminal at the start of each contract lets the group select maps, acquire weapons, and review details on the local threats. Upgrades improve quality of life features like item tracking. The pressure builds the longer a team lingers, as the environment reacts to their presence.

Extraction requires everyone to reach the van with the required haul. Failure on either the loot or extermination targets prevents an early exit, forcing continued engagement until the objectives clear or the run ends in failure.

Game Modes

EXTERM operates through a single core experience built around repeated contract runs. Each session involves selecting a map via the terminal, entering a procedurally generated site, completing the quota, and extracting. No separate competitive or solo modes exist at launch. The focus remains on cooperative runs where splitting up or staying together influences success against the map-specific monster mix.

Early Access begins with two maps and six elite monster types. Additional maps, enemy variants, and objective variety are planned for later updates, but the fundamental structure of quota-driven extraction stays consistent throughout development.

Key Mechanics

Monster behaviors form the main challenge. Each map features its own combination of regular and elite threats with unique logic that players must learn through direct encounters. Some watch from afar, others mimic friendly forms, and certain types pursue aggressively. The bestiary system ties into the terminal, where dossiers provide initial information before deployment.

Progression ties directly to the contract and quota systems. Successful extractions improve access to better equipment and upgrades. The solo developer has outlined plans to expand these systems with deeper layers in the full release, while keeping the central loop intact.

Is It Worth Playing?

EXTERM targets players who enjoy co-op horror extraction experiences with procedural elements and dual objectives. The Early Access version delivers a complete playable loop including map selection, weapon purchases, monster dossiers, and extraction pressure right from launch. As a single-developer project, it launches with two maps and six elite monsters, with a planned 4-8 month Early Access period focused on community feedback for balance and additions.

Those interested in shaping the game through bug reports and suggestions during development will find direct involvement opportunities. The absence of reviews at this stage reflects its pre-release status. Fans of tense team coordination against adaptive threats in shifting environments may find the core systems align with their preferences, particularly once more content arrives through updates.
