About Fakeouts

Fakeouts - about the game

Fakeouts is an asymmetric multiplayer hide-and-seek game set in a malfunctioning toy store filled with intelligent plush toys. Players take on the roles of Mimics or Security in short, chaotic matches on PC. The core loop revolves around one side blending into crowds of AI-controlled toys while the other side investigates and tests behavior to expose intruders.

Gameplay

Mimics possess almost any plush toy in the store, from bears and rabbits to walking bananas or avocados with legs. They must imitate the changing behavioral programs that govern the AI toys during an emergency diagnostic. These programs include wandering, following visitors, dancing, interacting with objects, gathering in groups, or standing idle. Success depends on observing the crowd and matching its movements without drawing attention.

Security players observe through cameras, watch for anomalies, and respond to incidents. They can trigger toy behaviors themselves by manipulating interactive objects or systems to force reactions from nearby toys. This turns the environment into a tool for testing suspects. Mimics can abandon a compromised toy body and possess another, but they remain exposed briefly while moving between hosts.

Both sides interact with the store's systems. Mimics create distractions by activating music, moving objects, or triggering demonstrations. They can also sabotage cameras, power, or controls to create blind spots or force Security to respond elsewhere. Security investigates these events while coordinating with a partner to narrow down suspects.

Game Modes

The game features a single primary mode built around the emergency diagnostic. Matches start with a preparation phase where Mimics select initial bodies and Security learns the layout. The diagnostic then activates, and toys begin following shifting protocols. Security wins by capturing every Mimic before time expires. Mimics win if at least one remains hidden when the diagnostic ends.

Team coordination matters on both sides. One Mimic can draw attention through sabotage or distractions while another changes bodies or repositions. Security pairs must decide when to split up for investigations without leaving key areas unguarded. The environment supports emergent interactions rather than scripted events, as toys respond to the same systems players manipulate.

Key Mechanics and Systems

Possession allows Mimics to switch bodies mid-match, but exposure outside a toy creates a narrow window for recapture. Sabotage has physical consequences that Security must address, turning every broken system into a potential trap or diversion. Systemic distractions arise from simple interactions between objects, music systems, and demonstration areas rather than menu selections.

Security testing involves deliberate changes to the situation, such as moving interactive displays or activating equipment to observe how the crowd behaves. Unusual reactions can reveal Mimics who otherwise blend in during passive observation. The store layout, with its shelves, demonstration zones, and carryable objects, influences sightlines and opportunities for both hiding and pursuit.

Is It Worth Playing?

Fakeouts suits players who enjoy asymmetric multiplayer experiences with strong emphasis on observation, deception, and environmental interaction. The short match length keeps sessions focused, while the mix of imitation, sabotage, and investigation creates varied rounds. Those who prefer direct combat or long campaigns may find the hide-and-seek structure less appealing.

The game supports team play on both factions and rewards learning the AI behavior patterns over time. Its indie scale and focus on systemic play make it a niche title best suited for groups interested in chaotic, replayable sessions rather than large-scale progression systems.
