About HEATSINK

HEATSINK - about the game

HEATSINK is an action indie game for PC that puts players in control of a first-person shooter built around a single heat gauge. Standing still or taking cover leads to rapid overheating and failure, while constant movement through the air provides the only cooling. The design eliminates traditional health bars, ammo counts, and timers in favor of thermodynamics that tie shooting directly to mobility and risk.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on managing core temperature while engaging enemies across procedurally challenging spaces. Firing weapons raises heat, and the only way to dissipate it is by flying through open air at speed. Ground contact offers no cooling benefit, so players must stay airborne to survive extended fights. Recoil from every shot functions as a thruster, turning the act of shooting into the primary method of movement and altitude control. The starter pistol, for example, generates thrust equal to gravitational pull, allowing sustained fire to maintain height without separate movement inputs.

Damage output increases with the player's own temperature, peaking near the red zone at 92 percent heat for nearly double effectiveness. This creates a deliberate push toward high-risk play, where staying near the overheating threshold rewards aggressive positioning. Overheating consumes one of a limited number of cycles, and exhausting the final cycle ends the run. Six distinct weapons support different flight and combat patterns, while twenty-two enemy species require adaptation through positioning and timing rather than simple cover tactics.

Game Modes

Three distinct modes structure the experience. LA DESCENTE delivers a campaign across five sectors, each containing five rooms and ending with a boss encounter. Each boss enforces one core rule that the rest of the game only encourages, such as sustained red-zone operation, continuous flight, weapon switching, or controlled overloads. Progress through the sectors builds familiarity with these constraints before the next boss resets expectations.

LA COULÉE offers endless waves in a single arena focused on survival and score accumulation. LA VOLÉE strips away enemies entirely for twelve pure movement courses built around launch pads, gates, and a clock. Failure occurs either by falling into the void or by core meltdown. Between runs, a foundry lets players spend earned ingots on permanent upgrades, all of which remain fully refundable at any time to avoid irreversible progression traps.

Core Mechanics and Progression

Weapon recoil serves as the universal movement system, eliminating the separation between offense and locomotion. Faster flight through air accelerates cooling, rewarding precise aerial control during combat. The economy of the game consistently directs attention to the edge of the heat limit, where damage multipliers are highest yet the margin for error shrinks. Five bosses in the campaign each highlight one of these systems, turning optional strategies into mandatory challenges that teach through failure and repetition.

Meta-progression remains flexible because every upgrade purchase can be reversed without penalty. This structure supports experimentation across the six weapons and different enemy types without locking players into suboptimal choices. The overall design keeps the focus on immediate feedback from heat management rather than external timers or resource tracking.

Is It Worth Playing?

HEATSINK targets players who enjoy fast-paced single-player shooters that replace conventional systems with a unified heat and movement mechanic. The campaign provides structured progression through increasingly strict rules, while the endless and movement modes offer score chasing and skill refinement without combat pressure. With a planned release in September 2026 and no user reviews available yet, the game remains an upcoming title whose reception will depend on how well the thermodynamics loop holds up across repeated runs. Those drawn to precise aerial control, risk-reward temperature scaling, and refundable upgrades may find the systems rewarding once it launches on PC.
