About Last Star Standing

Last Star Standing - about the game

Last Star Standing is an action indie casual game for PC in which players control a lone star fighting back against weaponized asteroids and alien forces across procedurally challenging space environments. The core loop centers on expanding from a single point of light into a full solar system while using gravitational mechanics and evolving weapons to survive waves of enemies.

Gameplay

Players begin as a lone light that bends space and gradually pull in wandering worlds to form orbiting planets. These can be customized into types such as Ice, Lava, Storm, Ringed, or Iron, each functioning as a distinct defensive and offensive tool. Captured asteroids are ground into a protective belt that damages incoming hordes, though strong hits can dislodge worlds that must then be reclaimed. Growth scales the star itself, deepening gravitational pull and drawing larger threats.

Movement relies on slingshot trajectories around gas giants and other bodies to chain momentum across four or five throws in succession. In certain areas, paths end at black holes that transport the player to new sectors. Nine base weapons support 23 upgrades and nine evolutions, including Solar Storm, Hypernova, Absolute Zero, and Event Horizon. These increase in scale and intensity with each level. Cosmic Anomalies yield Stellar Fragments, Novas, or Supernovas that deliver one, three, or five rewards, and evolutions require these anomalies to trigger.

Real cosmic events such as Quasi-Stars, White Holes, the Oh-My-God Particle, and the Boötes Void activate nearby. They pose risks but can be directed toward enemy groups for assistance. Hidden killboxes appear as narrow corridors that seal after entry, forcing confrontation with elite foes for substantial rewards. An alien chain of command escalates through commanders including Cruiser, Battleship, Shadow Dreadnought, Mothership, and The Sovereign. Defeating a boss early activates Overdrive, intensifying the horde until time expires.

Game Modes

The experience unfolds across five distinct regions, each governed by unique spatial rules. The Solar System serves as starting space with an alien presence. The Distant Galaxy features black holes that redirect every path. Dark Matter conceals ships until revealed by the player's light. Wormhole regions pull players and enemies through portals mid-combat. The Tesseract folds space, moving the player, foes, and projectiles together.

Three bonus stages supplement the main regions: Gas Giant, Asteroid Field, and Cosmic Rift. The latter cycles through all four altered-space effects in sequence. Eight playable stars provide starting variety, from Yellow Star and Red Giant through Blue Giant, White Dwarf, Neutron Star, Pulsar, Binary Star, and Black Hole. Each carries unique starting weapons and attributes. Permanent Power-Ups purchased with Solar Energy between runs carry forward, while the Curse option increases difficulty and rewards for experienced players. Runs last approximately ten minutes with full controller support.

Progression and Builds

Every world added increases overall size and attracts stronger enemies. Weapons brighten and expand with levels, while anomalies provide the only path to evolutions. Solar Energy spent on upgrades persists across attempts, allowing gradual strengthening of future runs. The horde scales with player power, maintaining pressure regardless of build strength. Hidden corridors and cosmic phenomena add layers of risk and reward that reward precise positioning and timing.

Is It Worth Playing?

Last Star Standing suits players who enjoy short, repeatable action sessions built around gravitational movement, weapon evolution, and defensive solar-system construction. The combination of eight distinct starting stars, region-specific rules, and permanent upgrades between runs creates meaningful variety without requiring long commitments. Controller support and the ten-minute run length make it accessible for casual play, while the Curse option and scaling horde provide depth for those seeking greater challenge. The focus on cosmic phenomena and evolving armaments delivers a consistent sense of growth within each attempt.
