About Mix-shogi

Mix-shogi - about the game

Mix-shogi is a strategy game that reimagines Japanese chess through customizable army building and a dynamic piece market. Players draft forces within a budget, arrange them freely, and then compete under standard shogi rules on PC. The result blends familiar movement, promotion, and drop mechanics with fresh layers of preparation and market reading.

Gameplay

Each match begins with army construction. Every participant receives one King and nine Pawns automatically. The remaining budget of 3,000 points covers purchases of Rooks, Bishops, Golds, Silvers, Knights, and Lances, with a maximum of 17 additional pieces allowed. Choices range from concentrating points on high-value major pieces to spreading resources across many minor ones, and each selection shapes the available tactics once play starts.

Piece prices fluctuate hourly according to collective purchases across the player base. Frequently chosen pieces rise in cost while less popular options drop, turning market awareness into a core skill. After purchases, Pawns occupy the third rank while the King and bought pieces can be placed anywhere on the first and second ranks. The participant who retains more unspent points gains the first move, creating a direct trade-off between stronger material and initiative.

Once the board is set, standard shogi rules govern all movement, captures, promotions, and drops. The game preserves the depth of classic shogi while the pre-game decisions introduce new strategic variety. Game records, known as kifu, can be saved for later review to refine future army builds and placements.

Game Modes

Single-player options include matches against an AI opponent trained specifically for Mix-shogi through self-play. Three difficulty settings-Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced-allow players to adjust challenge level. Online play supports matchmaking against other participants with three available time controls: 10 seconds per move, 3 minutes sudden death, or 10 minutes with 1-minute byoyomi increments.

These modes emphasize direct competition without additional layers such as campaigns or team formats. The focus remains on army drafting, placement, and execution under consistent rules across both AI and human opponents.

Core Mechanics and Strategy

Army building and the living market form the primary departures from traditional shogi. Fixed starting positions disappear entirely, replaced by player-driven formations that reward experimentation. Reading price trends adds an economic dimension, where undervalued pieces can form the basis of unexpected strategies. The first-move advantage tied to remaining points further integrates preparation with in-game decisions.

Because all post-setup play follows classic shogi conventions, experienced players can apply existing knowledge of piece movement and endgame tactics while adapting to the variable starting conditions. Newcomers benefit from the AI tiers to learn both the base rules and the new preparation phase at a measured pace.

Is It Worth Playing?

Mix-shogi suits players who enjoy shogi but seek alternatives to memorized openings and standard setups. The army-building phase and shifting market introduce meaningful pre-game choices that affect every match. Online matchmaking and multiple time controls support both casual sessions and more deliberate play.

The title enters Early Access on October 19, 2026, with core features already functional and further refinements planned based on community input. No player reviews exist yet, so reception remains to be seen. Those interested in strategy games that combine familiar rules with customizable preparation will find the most direct appeal here, particularly if they value experimentation over fixed formats.
