About Pay the House

Pay the House - about the game

Pay the House is a strategy and casual card collection game for PC set in Prohibition-era America. Players manage mounting debt to a shadowy loan house by ripping open packs of cigarette cards, completing themed sets, and converting collections into cash before interest and escalating payments turn the situation dire. The core loop blends pack opening, set building, and financial risk management across short 30 to 45 minute runs.

Gameplay

The experience centers on opening packs from a rotating shelf of seven varieties. Standard packs guarantee an uncommon floor on the final card, while High Roller packs deliver three cards with boosted epic and legendary chances but no floor. Special Order packs let players triple odds on a chosen set, and other types such as Whale, Pure, Double-Floor, and Back Alley appear in limited combinations each layer. Eighteen sets span five rarities with names including Champagne, Chips, Onyx, Blood Pact, and Pharaoh's Gold. Six sets are selected fresh each run, with sizes and jackpots varying per playthrough. Completing a set yields higher returns than selling individual cards, yet vault space starts limited at six slots, forcing tough choices on what to keep versus liquidate.

Debt payments arrive every two days, with every third payment designated Collection Night at double the amount. Players see the deadline approaching well in advance. Between layers, the Gilded Row offers three trinkets from a pool of thirty, each providing targeted advantages such as a free pack after set completions, partial refunds on seized cards, or halved daily interest after opening multiple packs. Only five trinket slots are available, so selections must align with the current debt trajectory and upcoming pack types.

Game Modes

Runs unfold across four escalating debt layers with fixed targets of 1,400, 3,000, 4,800, and 7,000. Clearing one layer triggers an immediate vault audit: unfinished sets liquidate at reduced value, and any pawned cards are lost. Cash and retained trinkets carry forward into the next layer alongside a new selection of sets. Three difficulty tiers control access to the full range of seven pack types, allowing gradual unlocking of higher-risk, higher-reward options. The shelf composition, set lineup, and jackpot values reroll every run, ensuring each attempt presents a distinct strategic puzzle.

Risk Management and Progression

Three escape options exist when payments loom too large. Pawning a card returns 80 percent of its value with the option to repurchase before permanent loss. A loan shark provides 300 cash at 25 percent daily interest. Deferral multiplies the owed amount by one and a half. Each choice trades immediate relief for steeper future costs. Hand-composed Art Deco noir artwork renders every card and trinket in black and gold, supporting full localization across 31 languages.

Is It Worth Playing?

Pay the House suits players who enjoy deliberate resource management and short, repeatable strategy sessions. The tension between pack variety, set completion pressure, and compounding debt creates meaningful decisions each run without requiring long commitments. Three difficulty tiers and the rotating shelf keep the experience fresh across multiple attempts, while trinket choices and risk tools add layers of planning. Those drawn to casual card mechanics paired with clear progression goals will find the structure rewarding, especially when experimenting with different pack combinations and trinket synergies on successive layers.
