Protocol Z is a zombie sandbox simulation for PC currently preparing for Early Access release. Players oversee a fully simulated town called New Hudson where residents follow daily routines before an outbreak begins, then intervene directly by spawning threats or taking control of characters in first person.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on a living town that operates independently with families, jobs, school schedules, traffic patterns, and a day night cycle. Residents head to work, children play at parks or attend classes, and shifts rotate at locations like the hospital, police station, and military base. Once the outbreak starts, players drop zombies into the environment, create tunnels for them to emerge from, or allow a single infection to spread naturally through bites.
Infected pursue sounds such as gunfire, smash through barriers, climb vehicles, and drag victims from buildings. Killed residents rise again as zombies. Special infected add variety with abilities like leaping to pin targets, using a tongue to drag people, spewing acid, bursting on death, or shrugging off damage as hulking brutes. Players can possess any human or zombie to fight in first person using fists, pistols, rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers, flamethrowers, or C4. Movement includes jumping, swimming, and diving in the sea, while vehicles allow ramming through crowds with full physics for launched bodies.
The town responds dynamically. Police handle calls and pursue wanted players. Ambulances retrieve the injured. Families board windows. Severe outbreaks trigger military martial law with checkpoints, floodlights, watchtowers, curfews, patrols, and C4 used to destroy tunnels. All structures and barricades remain destructible through shooting, ramming, or explosives. Players also place humans, zombies, vehicles, and buildings freely before triggering nine natural disasters including tsunamis, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, sinkholes, meteors, blizzards, dust storms, and landslides. Weather, power outages, and the full day night cycle further influence events.
Game Modes
Protocol Z operates primarily as an open sandbox where one player acts as the unseen controller of the outbreak while also dropping into first person action. The simulation supports single player sessions focused on watching the town react or intervening at any scale. Planned online co op will allow one participant to manage the overall sandbox while others control individual residents or zombies on the ground, enabling cooperative survival or competitive outbreak scenarios. No separate named modes exist beyond these core sandbox and first person perspectives, with all features accessible through the single unified experience.
Town Simulation and Response Systems
New Hudson features hundreds of residents with individual homes, jobs, and routines that continue without player input until the outbreak disrupts them. Police maintain wanted levels for law breaking, ambulances collect casualties, and escalating threats bring military forces that construct fortified positions and enforce restrictions. Destructible environments let players or zombies tear through fences, walls, roofs, doors, and entire buildings. Physics interactions send bodies flying from explosions or vehicle impacts, adding chaotic outcomes to every encounter.
Is It Worth Playing?
Protocol Z suits players who enjoy detailed simulation sandboxes combined with direct first person zombie survival and god like control over disasters. The Early Access version launches with the full core loop of town life, outbreak mechanics, special infected, destructible environments, nine disasters, and first person control already functional. Regular updates during the expected six to twelve month Early Access period will expand content based on player input, including additional response teams, deeper routines, more maps, and online co op. Those seeking emergent stories from a reactive town under siege will find the systems rewarding, while anyone preferring structured campaigns or polished multiplayer at launch may prefer to wait for further development. The game remains available only on PC through Steam.
