About Smashteroids

Smashteroids - about the game

Smashteroids is a single-player neon arcade roguelite shooter developed for PC. Players take control of a ship in a setting where command structures have collapsed, leaving only personal survival and resource gathering amid swarms of enemies on the way to a dying star.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on wave-based combat in which glowing vector-style enemies advance in patterns that demand constant movement and positioning. Fast chasers, splitting broods, charging units, and color-coded elites fill the screen, with visual cues indicating threat level. Credits earned from kills fund purchases at inter-stage shops, where players select from a large pool of stackable upgrades that alter projectiles, add effects like chain lightning or orbiting drones, and create compounding synergies across runs.

Each run begins with a fragile vessel that grows into a dominant presence through item combinations and procs. Visual effects emphasize heavy bloom and aberration to highlight the dense action. World hazards appear in different biomes, and reward shrines offer additional choices along the route. The experience remains single-player throughout, with no multiplayer elements present.

Game Modes

Two primary modes structure play. The campaign follows a branching star map that lets players select routes across dozens of biomes, each featuring unique hazards and shrines before culminating in a boss encounter. Every planet ends with a dedicated guardian fight that unfolds in multiple phases with distinct telegraphs and patterns.

An endless arcade mode provides an alternative focused on high-score survival and features Steam leaderboards for competitive tracking. Both modes draw from the same pool of ships, items, and enemies, allowing runs to carry forward unlocks and statistics.

Ships and Progression

Twenty-two distinct ships form the foundation of replayability. Each pairs a unique active ability with a signature item or mechanic, such as drone deployment, scattergun close-range focus, ricochet projectiles, necromantic summons, momentum-based ramming, critical-hit gambling, or scaling power tied to low resources. Over one hundred color palettes unlock separately and apply across the fleet.

Persistent systems track progress outside individual runs. A challenge-driven unlock board records ships, items, boss trophies, and palettes. The Starlog populates automatically as a bestiary and statistics log, revealing details on enemies and lifetime performance metrics. Three separate pilot profiles allow independent save slots with their own advancement.

Boss Encounters and Campaign Structure

Nineteen handcrafted bosses guard the planets, each designed as a multi-phase set piece with escalating attacks. Examples include advancing walls, sweeping beams, gravity manipulation, time-altering duels, and vanishing foes. First-time victories grant boss-specific items for future runs. The campaign routes all lead toward a final confrontation at the Coronach, the central dying star.

Over fifty enemy types populate the waves, ranging from basic fodder to specialized elites. The original soundtrack supports the action with dedicated boss tracks and fluid transitions between segments.

Is It Worth Playing?

Smashteroids targets players who enjoy roguelite progression combined with fast arcade shooting and build experimentation. The single-player focus, controller support, and emphasis on run variety through ship kits and item stacks suit those seeking repeated short sessions or longer campaign attempts. As a game planned for Early Access with a projected six-month period, it will incorporate player feedback for balance adjustments across ships and items. The full release is scheduled for January 2027, with current development confirming a playable campaign and endless mode already implemented. Fans of dense on-screen action and persistent unlocks will find the described systems align directly with that preference, while those preferring multiplayer or completed titles may prefer to wait for launch.
