About torpak

torpak - about the game

Torpak is a turn-based strategy game available on PC that blends dice rolls, territorial expansion, and card play on a hex-based map. Players compete to control connected land around their capital through careful point management and opportunistic conflicts, with options for both online multiplayer and local matches against AI opponents. As a free-to-play indie title in early access, it emphasizes accessible entry with full features unlocked for participants at hosted tables.

Gameplay

Each round begins with a choice between rolling dice to generate points or declaring war on an adjacent territory. Points from a roll, multiplied by any active bonuses, purchase adjacent hexes connected to a player's capital. Plains require one point, while hills, rivers, and other features scale in cost. Farms generate ongoing gold, ruins provide one-time rewards, shrines contribute to scoring, and mountains remain impassable. Unspent points disappear at the end of the turn, turning every roll into a decision about priority targets on the shared map of farms, hills, rivers, ruins, and mountains.

Skipping the roll allows a player to initiate war instead. Both sides roll the same die, and the difference multiplied by the attacker's multiplier determines how far the front line advances through enemy cells. Ties trigger rerolls. Successful defense lets the defender counter on the attacker's land. Terrain modifiers such as hills for cover and forts for holding positions influence outcomes, while a fallen capital relocates rather than ending the game immediately.

Gold earned from farms and the capital funds purchases from a fresh private row of cards each round. These cards fall into categories that alter rolls, resolve during hidden reaction windows, adjust cell costs, place hidden traps, or construct permanent structures. The full set of twenty-eight cards remains available without additional purchases.

Game Modes

Matches support two to six players in any combination of human participants and AI at three difficulty levels. Board sizes range across three options, with adjustable round limits from eight to eighteen and optional turn timers. Online play allows password-protected rooms, quick matchmaking, or browsing open tables, complete with quick and text chat. Local sessions focus on AI opponents without network requirements. A dropped connection permits rejoining the same seat, and the session continues even if the host departs.

Victory occurs when rounds conclude, with the largest connected land area around a capital determining the winner. Isolated territory counts at half value, and shrines add extra points. Players who lose their final cell observe the remaining action from the sidelines.

Core Mechanics and Progression

The hex map creates natural choke points and expansion paths that reward forward planning over multiple rounds. Multipliers from cards or structures compound the value of strong rolls, while defensive structures and terrain create meaningful choices during wars. Gold management ties directly into card access, creating a loop where territorial gains fund tactical options that reshape future rolls or conflicts. Keyboard and mouse or gamepad controls support both relaxed local sessions and competitive online tables.

Is It Worth Playing?

Torpak delivers a focused turn-based experience centered on land acquisition and tactical card use that suits players who enjoy deliberate strategy sessions with friends or against adjustable AI. Its free-to-play model provides complete access to all cards and seats when joining hosted games, with only hosting requiring a one-time unlock. The mix of dice-driven uncertainty, direct conflict resolution, and private card rows supports repeated plays without paywalls blocking core content. Those seeking short to medium sessions with clear win conditions based on connected territory will find consistent depth in the hex layout and card interactions. The early access status means ongoing refinements remain possible, but the current systems already form a complete package for two to six participants.
