Zhong Kui: Survivor is a single-player survivor-like action roguelite set in Chinese mythology. Players take on the role of Zhong Kui, the demon queller, during cursed night patrols where waves of yaoguai monsters approach from all sides. The experience centers on positioning, automatic weapon attacks, upgrade selections, and route choices that shape each attempt.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around surviving escalating enemy waves while managing resources and objectives. Movement and dodging create space as weapons fire automatically, allowing focus on positioning and timing. Ritual weapons such as blades, thunder staffs, bombs, resonance rings, and Bagua formations upgrade along distinct paths that alter combat style and effectiveness.
Players balance crowd control, personal survival, lantern objectives, boss encounters, and resource collection during each patrol. Route decisions between battles influence available rewards, risks, and upcoming challenges. Chinese-themed enemies including cloth ghosts, Bifang, Xuhao, coffin hands, belly ghosts, and Luotoushi appear throughout runs.
Automatic attacks and upgrade systems encourage experimentation with different weapon combinations. Resource management extends beyond individual runs through collected soul currency, herbs, ores, and monster drops that support ongoing development.
Game Modes
The primary experience consists of route-based night patrols that function as roguelite runs. Each patrol presents waves of enemies, elite variants, and boss pressure while incorporating lantern objectives and resource gathering. Route choices determine the sequence of encounters and available upgrades.
Between patrols, players engage with offline progression systems that carry progress forward. These include cave alchemy for crafting, self-researched pill recipes, pet feeding and training for companion support, codex upgrades through monster records, and permanent stat improvements. The Zhong Kui Maze serves as a central hub for these meta elements.
No additional separate modes appear in the current build. All activity ties into the night patrol structure and its associated progression loop.
Progression and Systems
Meta progression forms a key layer beyond individual runs. Loot from failed or successful patrols feeds into alchemy, herb codexes, ore vaults, and spirit pet growth. Pets fight alongside Zhong Kui after feeding and training. A monster bestiary tracks collected entries with artwork, lore, origins, traits, and drops.
Permanent character growth occurs through stat upgrades and researched recipes. Every patrol outcome contributes something usable for future attempts, creating a steady sense of advancement even after defeats. Weapon evolution paths allow builds to specialize in areas such as lightning, explosions, resonance waves, or field effects.
Is It Worth Playing?
Zhong Kui: Survivor enters Early Access on July 31, 2026, with a planned duration of approximately three months. The current version delivers the core night-patrol loop, multiple weapon types with evolution paths, enemy waves, bosses, and foundational offline systems including the Zhong Kui Maze, alchemy, and spirit companions.
Single-player focus suits those who enjoy roguelite survivor gameplay with Chinese mythology themes and incremental meta progression. The game remains under active development, with plans to expand weapons, enemies, maps, and balance based on player input. Those interested in early builds of this style of action roguelite may find value in participating during this phase, while others might prefer to wait for further content additions and polish in the full release.
