Ashplate is a single-player strategy indie roguelike deckbuilder set in a world rendered in ash and ember. Players take on the role of a former member of the Emperor's sworn guard seeking to reclaim the throne after a traitor seizes power and unleashes the army on the Fallen Kiln.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on card-based combat across a branching map. Each run begins with a fresh deck that players expand through drafting from more than 150 cards. Combat requires reading enemy intents to counter specific threats, such as silencing heads before they act or managing venom that bypasses Block. Survivors bring distinct playstyles, with the Kilnborn igniting struck foes and the Skirmisher evading attacks before retaliating. Additional survivors appear in the full release.
Progression extends beyond the deck itself. Two trinket slots, run-long artifacts, boons from unusual rooms, and merchant Gems allow customization of each attempt. The world unfolds through distinct regions like the Drowned Mire, Moonlit Hunting Grounds, and Underbarrow, each featuring unique elites and a concluding boss.
Game Modes
Ashplate focuses on single-player roguelike runs. Every attempt generates a new path through the branching map, with deck construction and survivor choice shaping the experience. Runs emphasize adaptation to procedural encounters and resource management rather than persistent progression between attempts.
World and Progression
The painted environments provide varied backdrops for encounters, each region carrying its own set of challenges and a final confrontation. Players navigate these areas while managing card draws, enemy patterns, and limited resources to advance toward the throne. The structure rewards repeated runs through fresh combinations of cards, trinkets, and artifacts.
Is It Worth Playing?
A free demo lets players experience the first two acts using both initial survivors. This setup suits fans of roguelike deckbuilders who enjoy tactical card combat, enemy intent reading, and run-to-run variety in a single-player format. The emphasis on distinct survivor abilities and layered build options beyond the deck offers depth for those seeking strategic depth without multiplayer elements.
