Once upon a time, in a far-far away galaxy there existed a race of Cretas, who yearned for travel. Physical voyages were extremely laborious and long for such highly evolved beings though, so they designed the Temporal Net. The universal energy transformation system, using black holes and the tilt of the horizon, allowed Cretas to instantly travel between time and worlds.The Cretas realized that the Temporal Net also had other properties. Cretas scientists learned how to use it for transition to the metaphysical form of existence. Cretas liked the idea of transforming into a disembodied free mind, in harmony with the universe, and anima-transfer became a very popular procedure. Soon the whole race disappeared from the observable universe, leaving behind ruins on wasted planets, and an unruly Temporal Net.
Without Cretas supervision, the Temporal Net began to glitch and randomly open portals in different worlds. It was easy to get in, but getting out was almost impossible. The Net generated copies of creatures that had fallen into it from an infinite number of alternative universes, simultaneously opening portals in them. Thus, its mass is growing at a catastrophic rate, making it difficult for the traveller to find the right portal and way home.
Explorers, scientists, and adventurers along with random passers-by will have to take up weapons and drive out competitors in the fight for the portals they need.
