About DESKPOP

DESKPOP - about the game

DESKPOP is a simulation game for PC that turns the computer desktop into a miniature music machine driven by physics interactions. Players build rhythms and melodies by arranging and tuning physical objects rather than placing notes on a timeline.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on eight distinct physics engines that generate sound through motion and collision. Objects such as pinballs, dominoes, pendulums, raindrops, boats, and magnetic particles move according to adjustable parameters including position, direction, quantity, force, and speed. Each collision or impact at designated points triggers a musical note whose pitch can be assigned individually.

Users layer up to eight of these devices across separate tracks and multiple measures. Tempo, timbre, and playing style controls shape the overall output while the entire arrangement runs as a continuous loop. Changes to object behavior immediately affect the emerging music, encouraging iterative adjustments until the desired rhythms and melodies emerge.

Game Modes

A free-scale mode allows unrestricted pitch assignment and experimentation across any notes. Five regional mode cards expand the options with predefined scales, instruments, and tonal palettes drawn from Arabic, Celtic, Chinese, Japanese, and Indonesian traditions. Each card shifts the available sounds and harmonic framework, supporting distinct stylistic explorations within the same physics systems.

Creations can be saved at any stage and reloaded for further refinement, supporting both quick tests and extended composition sessions.

Creative Tools and Customization

Positioning and quantity adjustments alter rhythmic patterns without changing the underlying physics rules. Direction and force settings influence timing and intensity of note triggers. Pitch assignment at collision points lets a single device produce entirely different melodic lines depending on configuration.

The eight engines each carry unique movement characteristics that contribute distinct rhythmic feels, from the rapid bounces of pinballs to the sequential falls of domino chains or the steady swings of pendulums.

Is It Worth Playing?

DESKPOP suits players who enjoy hands-on music creation through visual and physical simulation rather than traditional sequencing. Its desktop-based format keeps the experience lightweight and always accessible alongside other tasks. The combination of physics-driven sound generation and regional scale options provides focused creative depth without requiring prior music theory knowledge.

Those drawn to experimental sound design or relaxing loop-building will find consistent value in refining arrangements over multiple sessions. The absence of competitive or narrative elements keeps the focus squarely on personal musical experimentation.
