About Fallen Nights

Fallen Nights - about the game

Fallen Nights is a top-down survival tower defense game that blends resource management with roguelike progression on PC. Players scavenge scrap during the day to either fortify a camp or repair a broken vehicle while endless waves of the dead approach at night. The core tension comes from deciding how much scrap to allocate each day before the horde arrives and targets the escape vehicle rather than the player directly.

Gameplay

The daily cycle forms the heart of the experience. Daylight hours offer a single pile of scrap that must be split between two uses: constructing or upgrading defensive buildings, or walking to the vehicle to pour resources into repairs. Holding the input pours scrap steadily, while releasing stops the process. Overcommitting to repairs leaves the camp vulnerable, while excessive building delays escape and risks losing accumulated resources to later waves.

Eight distinct buildings each serve one specific purpose. Spikes slow and funnel enemies into kill zones. Barricades block paths without dealing damage. Turrets fire automatically until their ammunition depletes. Depots resupply nearby weapons. Floodlights extend turret and mortar range by illuminating areas. Mortars deliver slow but powerful area damage that ignores line of sight. Mines deliver single high-damage hits. Rigs generate additional scrap each dawn, with greater yields when placed farther from the main camp. Limited slots force constant trade-offs, and players can dismantle existing structures for partial scrap refunds to adapt the layout as nights grow more intense.

Four starting survivors bring different starting conditions: the Drifter, Mechanic, Hunter, and Warden. Mid-fight level-ups present choices from a deck of thirty-three upgrade cards. These cards steer each run toward stronger weapons, better camp infrastructure, or improved personal mobility. Because every night follows a fixed sequence of enemies and spawn points, repeated attempts on the same night reward pattern recognition and precise camp adjustments rather than random outcomes.

Game Modes

The game centers on a four-chapter campaign that takes players through distinct environments: a riverbank, a forest, a mountain pass, and a bunker. Each chapter presents one primary broken vehicle that must be repaired across multiple nights. After completing the campaign chapters, twelve additional standalone maps become available, with four of those maps offering alternate layouts for varied defensive challenges.

Progression carries forward through Steam Cloud saves, allowing runs to continue across different machines. Full controller support ensures the game plays smoothly on Steam Deck. The structure emphasizes single-player sessions where each night builds on the previous day's decisions without any multiplayer elements or seasonal content.

Campaign Structure and Progression

Campaign chapters advance only after the current vehicle is repaired and the player escapes in daylight. Nights continue indefinitely until that point, with difficulty scaling through larger and more coordinated enemy groups. A boss appears every fifth night, adding six distinct death conditions across the experience. Standalone maps function as self-contained challenges that test different camp configurations without the overarching repair goal.

Hand-drawn pixel art defines the visual style, paired with an original chiptune soundtrack composed entirely within the game's custom engine. No third-party tools handle core systems, which keeps performance consistent even on integrated graphics.

Is It Worth Playing?

Fallen Nights suits players who enjoy deliberate, high-stakes resource allocation in tower defense formats. The fixed nightly sequences reward learning enemy patterns and refining camp layouts over multiple attempts. The card-based upgrades introduce meaningful run-to-run variation without relying on pure randomness. Those who prefer endless survival loops with clear win conditions and no time-limited events will find the structure satisfying. Because the game remains in a pre-release state with no public review data available, interested players should monitor its launch for confirmation of performance and balance on their hardware.
