About Great Northern War

Great Northern War - about the game

Great Northern War is a strategy and simulation wargame for PC that recreates the tactical battles and campaigns of the early 18th-century conflict between Sweden and its rivals for control of the Baltic region. Players command historical armies across detailed maps that reflect the terrain and conditions of Northern and Eastern Europe, from snow-covered plains to fortified towns and frozen rivers.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on commanding units in turn-based tactical engagements where positioning, formation, and timing determine outcomes. Swedish forces emphasize aggressive Gå-På tactics that pair close-range musket volleys with shock attacks, while Russian units improve over the course of the war through reforms that enhance discipline and leadership. Terrain features such as forests, marshes, and extreme winter weather affect movement, fatigue, and supply lines, forcing commanders to manage attrition alongside direct combat.

Unit quality varies by army and period, incorporating factors like training, morale, equipment, and historical performance. Infantry formations mix musketeers with pikemen for some sides, while cavalry ranges from Swedish charges to more measured fire-and-charge approaches. Dragoons can fight mounted or dismounted, and light forces including Cossacks and Norwegian ski troops handle reconnaissance and harassment in difficult ground. Artillery supports advances at the regimental level or dominates sieges with heavier pieces. Field fortifications, command limits, and supply constraints add layers of decision-making in every engagement.

Game Modes

Players access 89 scenarios that range from a solo tutorial to major historical battles, smaller skirmishes, river crossings, amphibious operations, sieges, and variant what-if situations. Specialized versions support both head-to-head matches and solo play against the AI. Five structured campaigns link battles across connected operations, with results from one engagement influencing later ones through the 1700 Campaign, Polish Campaign, Russian Campaign, Finnish Campaign, and Norwegian Campaign.

Additional options include play against the computer AI, Play-By-Email, LAN and live Internet multiplayer, and two-player Hot Seat mode. The included Scanian War content adds 20 scenarios that cover earlier conflicts between Sweden and Denmark-Norway, providing historical context for the main war through battles such as Halmstad, Lund, and Landskrona.

Campaigns and Armies

Commanders recreate the full scope of the war from either side. Swedish options feature Guards and line infantry, Finnish troops, provincial regiments, cavalry, dragoons, Baltic and German contingents, pro-Swedish Polish-Lithuanian formations, Cossack allies, and field artillery. Opposing forces include Russian Guards and regulars that evolve during the conflict, dragoons, Cossacks, Danish and Norwegian infantry and cavalry, Saxon units, Polish-Lithuanian hussars and pancerni, Prussian allies, and various militia or irregular elements.

Extensive maps cover Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Baltic provinces, Poland-Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, and Swedish possessions in Germany. Many extend beyond historical battlefields to allow greater maneuver. Editing tools support customization through campaign, scenario, and sub-map editors for creating new content or refining existing maps.

Is It Worth Playing?

This title suits players who enjoy detailed historical wargames with an emphasis on accurate orders of battle, period-specific tactics, and campaign continuity. The variety of scenarios and the ability to experience the war through linked operations provide substantial replay value for those interested in early 18th-century European conflicts. As a single-player focused experience with strong AI and multiplayer options, it appeals to both solo strategists and those seeking competitive matches. The game remains in development ahead of its planned release, with a demo available for testing core systems.
