About Headlander

Headlander - about the game

Headlander is a singleplayer side-scrolling action-adventure game developed by Double Fine Productions. Players control the last known human, reduced to a disembodied head, in a retro-futuristic world where humanity has uploaded its consciousness into robotic bodies under the control of a malfunctioning computer system.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on exploration and body possession. The head uses a specialized helmet to launch into and take over any compatible robotic host. Each new body grants distinct movement options, weapons, and tools that open previously inaccessible areas. Platforming sections require precise jumps and momentum management while combat involves switching hosts mid-fight to exploit enemy weaknesses or environmental hazards. Puzzles often involve using a host's unique function, such as heavy lifting or ranged attacks, to progress through automated facilities and derelict structures. The game emphasizes trial-and-error experimentation as players learn which bodies suit specific challenges.

Progression follows a Metroidvania structure. New abilities expand the map gradually, encouraging backtracking to reach earlier locked sections. Combat remains secondary to navigation and problem-solving, with encounters designed around quick host swaps rather than prolonged engagements. The world features layered environments filled with security systems, maintenance drones, and malfunctioning machinery that react to the player's presence.

Game Modes

Headlander offers a single continuous campaign. Players advance through connected regions by acquiring new hosts and abilities, uncovering the backstory of the protagonist and the automated society. There are no separate multiplayer modes, competitive arenas, or co-operative options. The experience remains focused on solo exploration and narrative discovery across the main sequence of areas.

Setting and Atmosphere

The game draws visual and thematic inspiration from 1970s science fiction, presenting a once-utopian society now dominated by rigid automation. Environments range from sterile corridors and control rooms to overgrown or decaying sections where the robotic inhabitants follow outdated protocols. Humor arises from the contrast between the cheerful retro design and the underlying dystopian reality, with dialogue and environmental details highlighting the absurdity of the situation.

Is It Worth Playing?

Headlander receives consistently positive feedback from players who enjoy quirky singleplayer adventures with strong exploration elements. Steam user reviews stand at Very Positive, with 90 percent approval from over 600 ratings. The title suits those who appreciate Metroidvania-style progression, puzzle-platforming, and distinctive art direction over intense action or multiplayer features. It remains available as a complete package with no ongoing seasonal content or required updates, making it a straightforward purchase for fans of Double Fine's earlier works. Those seeking fast-paced combat or competitive play will find the deliberate pacing and emphasis on host-swapping less engaging.
