About Jacks are Better

Jacks are Better - about the game

Jacks are Better is a strategy indie game for PC that layers roguelike progression onto the core loop of video poker. Players manage a growing floor of machines while navigating nightly quotas and limited resources in runs that emphasize decision making over luck alone.

Gameplay

Each run begins with a five card deal. The player holds cards as desired, after which every machine on the floor resolves the same hand independently. Early nights feature just three machines, expanding to as many as one hundred later. This setup keeps focus on a single set of five cards while the expanding floor multiplies outcomes. Deals occur without betting, and pressure comes from nightly quotas that rise steadily. Six to nine deals per night provide the window to meet the target, with three favors available for redeals or presses. Meeting the quota allows an immediate cash out. Falling short once triggers a marker from the house, and a second miss ends the night.

Between nights, comps earned beyond the quota fund purchases in the shop. Machines are leased in banks ranging from three to twenty five units. Growth expands the reach of held cards across entire banks. Deck edits persist through the run, allowing changes such as dyeing cards, adding foil, designating wilds, shredding unwanted ranks, or twinning jacks. Packs opened at the counter introduce new options, while licenses grant permanent upgrades like extra favors or additional shelves. Two starting cabinets and five denominations from penny to high limit set the initial floor layout.

Game Modes

The main campaign spans twelve nights, each with its own quota and a house rule that activates on nights three, six, nine, and twelve. These rules alter play in specific ways, such as restricting draws or imposing taxes. Completing the night twelve quota ends the standard run. Endless mode then becomes available, tripling the quota each subsequent night for continued play. A daily run option uses a shared seed so every player faces the same deck and shop inventory. This creates a consistent daily challenge across the community without direct competition.

Progression elements include a collection of one hundred fifty mods that modify paytables, introduce crowd based payouts, alter tempo or economy, and add special hands or jackpots. Mods can be wired across banks or placed in the pit for floor wide effects. Feats track additional accomplishments across runs.

Is It Worth Playing?

Jacks are Better suits players who enjoy deliberate card decisions within a roguelike structure. The single hand focus combined with expanding machine management creates a tight loop where each choice influences multiple outcomes. Keyboard and mouse controls keep every action to one input, supporting sessions around thirty minutes. The absence of real money betting shifts emphasis to quota management and mod synergies rather than financial risk. Those drawn to strategy games that reward planning across multiple nights will find the core systems rewarding, while the daily shared seed adds a layer of repeatable competition through identical conditions. The game remains in active development with its full set of mods and feats available for collection.

Progression and Customization

Comps serve as the primary currency for expanding the floor and acquiring upgrades. Banks of machines grow through leasing, and hold effects scale accordingly. The one hundred fifty mods cover specialists that reshape paytables, crowd modifiers tied to collective floor performance, and options focused on deck composition or jackpot triggers. Installation choices allow targeted application to specific banks or broad pit coverage. Persistent deck alterations add another dimension, letting players tailor the card pool to preferred strategies over the course of a run. This layer of customization rewards experimentation with different mod combinations and bank layouts across multiple attempts.
