About JANOLITH

JANOLITH - about the game

JANOLITH is a single-player strategy game that blends word construction with roguelite progression on PC. Players build and modify words on a shared board using double-sided stones, each carrying one letter on the front and another on the back. The core loop revolves around placing stones to form valid words while flipping existing ones to alter letters, which in turn reshapes every connected word on the board.

Gameplay

Placement begins with an open board where stones land with both sides visible, allowing the player to select the active letter. Flips occur on stones already placed, provided every resulting word remains valid in the dictionary. Scoring multiplies a word's base value by a multiplier drawn from heavy letters facing upward on stones involved in placement or flips. Strategic flips turn modest combinations into high-scoring ones by repositioning powerful letters without breaking the board's integrity.

Each run carries a persistent bag of stones that players refine between rounds. Options include gilding a stone for double scoring, rewriting its reverse side, cleaving weak entries from the bag, or duplicating strong ones with a twin. Letter values and multipliers shift dynamically, rewarding careful management of which faces remain exposed. The system supports English and German dictionaries with over 170,000 and 1.3 million words respectively, each using tailored stone sets and point assignments. In-game lookups pull definitions from Wiktionary, and rejected real words can be reported for future inclusion.

Game Modes

New Run delivers the complete roguelite experience across six chapters of escalating targets. Limited moves and discards per round force efficient paths, with choices between smaller or larger rounds and shop visits before facing chapter bosses. Daily Challenge presents the identical run to all players for one attempt per day alongside a public leaderboard. Weekly Challenge extends a single run across seven days, featuring a rotating card of the week and unlimited attempts where only the best score counts. Match vs. AI offers direct competition on an open board, with both participants starting at equal points and racing to zero across three difficulty settings. A brief guided introduction covers placement, flipping mechanics, and multiplier usage for newcomers.

Progression and Customization

Experience accumulates from every run, successful or not, feeding a Reward Path that reaches level 30. Milestones expand the rack from six to ten stones, enlarge the bag, and unlock additional cards. Special stones such as Gilded, Glass, Crystal, and Joker variants join the bag through the Manage Bag interface. The Word Lexicon records every played word, while 22 achievements track broader accomplishments. Thirty-one cards modify scoring rules, examples including Mirror for backward reading, Palindrome, Bookends, and Turncoat. Cards level up and arrange in a column that activates slot mechanics like Opener and Closer.

Bosses and Challenges

Twelve distinct bosses alter core rules at chapter ends. The Rust prevents placed stones from flipping. The Narrows compress the board into a narrow strip. The Glut restricts each letter to scoring once per move. The Deadline imposes time limits on every action. After each chapter, players select between a milder or harsher boss, with the riskier option granting access to a richer shop stocked with crystals for card purchases. Full mouse and gamepad support, including Steam Deck-optimized layouts at 1280x800 resolution with ultrawide scaling, reduced motion settings, and separate audio controls, keep sessions comfortable across Windows and Linux.

Is It Worth Playing?

JANOLITH suits players who enjoy strategic word games combined with roguelite decision-making and persistent progression. The flip mechanic introduces constant board evolution that distinguishes it from static placement titles, while boss variety and card synergies create meaningful run-to-run differences. Multiple modes support both focused solo campaigns and competitive daily or weekly leaderboards. With no user reviews available at this stage and release still pending, the game appeals most to those drawn to its unique double-sided stone system and language flexibility. Availability on PC with controller support and cross-language options broadens its reach for word puzzle enthusiasts seeking depth beyond traditional formats.
