About One Last Machine

One Last Machine - about the game

One Last Machine is a single-player action, indie, RPG, simulation, and adventure title set on a post-apocalyptic Earth in 2087. Players take the role of the lead scientist who remained behind after Project New Horizon created an unstable Rift that now releases creatures into the world each night. The core objective is to mine resources, process them through an expanding production chain, and construct the Rift Closure Machine while surviving nightly threats and supporting a nearby settlement.

Gameplay

The gameplay centers on a daily cycle of underground exploration and surface defense. During daylight hours, players descend into a large underground world divided into multiple geological layers. Mining reveals resource deposits, hidden caves, buried crates, and rare caches. Tools allow construction of ladders, platforms, and tunnel lighting to expand the mining network and reach deeper, more valuable materials.

Raw resources return to the workshop for processing. A complete manufacturing chain includes operating a furnace to smelt metals, a casting table for components, a rolling mill for plates and conductors, and a workbench for advanced parts. Electricity management powers machines, lighting, and automated defenses. Upgrades to production equipment increase output speed. Manufacturing orders from the settlement provide additional goals and rewards that improve equipment and prepare for tougher expeditions.

At night, creatures emerge from the Rift and attack the surface. Combat involves direct fighting, equipment upgrades, and construction of defensive turrets. A powered suit with special abilities becomes available later in progression. Surface restoration through tree planting gradually repairs the devastated environment. The story-driven structure ties every mined material and manufactured part to the construction of four major modules of the Rift Closure Machine, which physically grows in the workshop at 25, 50, 75, and 100 percent completion.

Game Modes

One Last Machine operates as a single-player experience with no separate multiplayer modes or competitive formats. Progression unfolds through a unified campaign that combines resource gathering, crafting, base building, and combat within the same persistent world. The structure emphasizes story-driven advancement toward closing the Rift, with all activities contributing to the central machine construction objective. Settlement orders and equipment upgrades serve as integrated progression systems rather than distinct modes.

Key Mechanics and Progression

Resource refinement forms the backbone of advancement. Players smelt, cast, roll, and assemble components in sequence to produce increasingly complex parts. Power allocation requires balancing machine operation, lighting, and turret defense during vulnerable night periods. Underground threats add combat layers to mining runs, while surface attacks demand preparation through better gear and automated defenses. The workshop expands alongside the mine depth, creating a feedback loop where deeper exploration yields materials for faster production and stronger equipment.

Settlement interactions add variety through order fulfillment that rewards upgrades and new capabilities. The powered suit introduces special abilities that alter combat and exploration options. Physical growth of the Rift Closure Machine provides visible milestones that reinforce the long-term goal without introducing unrelated side activities.

Is It Worth Playing?

One Last Machine suits players who enjoy methodical resource management combined with survival elements and incremental crafting progression. The focused single-player loop of mining, refining, defending, and building toward a clear endpoint delivers a self-contained experience centered on one objective. Those who appreciate detailed production chains, underground exploration, and nightly defense cycles will find consistent engagement through the expanding workshop and deepening mine. The absence of multiplayer or additional modes keeps the scope tight around the core loop of gathering materials and constructing the final machine.
