About Paperlings

Paperlings - about the game

Paperlings is an indie casual simulation game for PC that blends desktop companion mechanics with deeper creature-raising and world-building elements. Players care for a paper creature that exists both as a small window on the desktop and as the center of a larger papercraft town.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on raising a single creature through daily interactions that shape its growth and eventual evolution. Care routines include feeding, training, and monitoring its needs, with the desktop window showing the creature puttering around, napping, or reacting to the player's environment such as lights being left on or off. Time passes in real hours, advancing the creature's age and state each morning.

Evolutions branch based on actual treatment rather than fixed stats. Mistakes lead down one path while consistent training opens another, and the final form appears only once per life cycle. The creature learns moves through practice that carry real consequences in later activities.

A separate fishing system provides a slower pace. Players cast at the pond and observe the bobber to determine the fish type based on movement speed. Thirteen paper fish exist in total, with rarer ones requiring specific conditions and a rod that improves through use. A lure shop offers additional options for extended sessions.

Game Modes

The game operates in two primary layers that run simultaneously. The desktop companion layer keeps the creature visible and active while the player works on other tasks. The full game layer opens through a door into the papercraft town, where players access a shop, an arcade, a dojo for training, a graveyard for memorials, and a town square that populates with recruited neighbors.

Battles form another distinct activity. These take place on wild roads or in weekly street brackets, unfolding as short pop-up paper theater sequences. Outcomes depend on prior training rather than numerical levels, and a loss sends the creature to bed for two days of recovery.

A monthly tournament called the cup runs a bracket in the arena. The winner receives a podium ceremony attended by the full town. Neighbors participate in the event, adding to the atmosphere with hand-cut confetti effects.

World and Progression

The papercraft setting remembers player actions across sessions. Each day ends with tucking the creature into bed, after which night events influence the next morning. Creatures age, pass away, and leave stones in the graveyard along with entries in a family chronicle. Descendants inherit traits, colorways, and heirlooms from previous lives.

Ten lineages contain 99 total forms. Most appear through normal play, while one remains hidden behind an unexplained rumor. Twenty-one neighbors can be recruited, each providing unique benefits such as reduced medicine costs from a nurse or daily clues from a gossip. A living calendar introduces market days, sparring events, festivals, and occasional natural occurrences like mushroom blooms or shooting stars.

Generations extend the experience further. Players can board creatures at daycare, select the next egg, and track legacy progress that builds across multiple lives. A deeper area beneath the town holds an additional door and a single lesson from its keeper.

Is It Worth Playing?

Paperlings targets players who enjoy slow-burn simulation and pet-raising games with permanent consequences. The combination of desktop integration and generational depth creates a persistent world that continues even when the main window is closed. All content supports single-player only, with no multiplayer features confirmed.

The game is scheduled for release in April 2027 and currently has no user reviews or completed play sessions available. Those drawn to handmade visual styles, evolving creature stories, and quiet activities like fishing may find the mechanics rewarding once it launches. The emphasis on real care decisions and lasting family records sets it apart from typical casual simulations.
