About Rites of Thaw

Rites of Thaw - about the game

Rites of Thaw is a strategy auto battler set in Slavic folklore. Players build armies from a shared pool of creatures drawn from tradition, including Leshy, Strzyga, Domovoi, Vodyanoy, Kikimora, and Rarog. The game compresses a full year into roughly twenty-five minutes of play, with positioning, timing, and sacrifice shaping every outcome on PC.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on buying creatures from a shared pool, placing them on a board where position determines effectiveness, and then watching the automated battle resolve. The Wheel of the Year governs each round through six festivals that appear in advance. Three major festivals grant powerful gifts in exchange for a cost such as a creature, gold, health, a bench slot, or a vow. Three minor festivals alter the rules for all players at once, such as flooding back rows, rewarding gold for fallen units, or freezing the shop.

Rites placed on the board function like additional units. A shrine heals, a bonfire burns enemies, and a green bough raises the dead, yet opponents can destroy these structures. Day and night cycles further shift combat: night conceals the back line, day extends archer range, dusk channels fights into lanes, and night prevents back-row shots when a front unit stands guard. Hunters exploit uncovered positions. Players know their next opponent in advance and can view that opponent's previous board setup to prepare counters.

Each game features a unique map with three sacred fields. The Hallow provides protection, the Barrow revives a fallen creature once, and the Mire immobilizes an enemy. Thirty-six creatures each contribute to two synergies at once, while the chieftain of each of the six lands rewrites how that synergy operates. Creatures that survive multiple battles gain veteran status, earning bynames and later titles. Veterans can return in future games during Forefathers' Eve.

The Thaw arrives in round twenty-one and returns every sacrificed creature as a phantom that retains its stars and rank for the remainder of the run. No shop timer exists, allowing deliberate decisions, and runs can be saved and resumed later.

Game Modes

Play proceeds asynchronously. The seven seats at the table fill with ghosts of other players' saved boards or, when no ghost waits, with rivals drawn from folklore such as Baba Yaga, Popiel, and Twardowski. These rivals follow the same rules, including gifts and day-night effects. A player's own ghost continues fighting in other games while the owner is offline. Finished games remain in an archive that includes board codes for sharing.

The Daily Tournament pits every participant against the same set of seven ghosts. Leaderboards track daily and seasonal performance, and festivals align with their real-world dates in the Slavic ritual calendar. This structure supports solo play at any pace without queues or live opponents required.

The Setting and Creatures

The world draws from authentic Slavic traditions across six lands: the Wildwood, the Stronghold, the Steppe, the Marsh, Nawia, and the Sky. No elves or generic fantasy elements appear. Every creature belongs to two synergies, and land chieftains modify those synergies. Veterans carry forward across sessions, creating a sense of continuity between games. The small Polish studio Old Spruce Works developed the title with hand-painted illustrations for creatures and key interface elements, ensuring the festivals follow the genuine ritual year.

Is It Worth Playing?

Rites of Thaw suits players who enjoy deliberate auto battler strategy with heavy emphasis on positioning, long-term planning, and thematic consistency. The absence of timers and the asynchronous ghost system allow flexible sessions, while the Daily Tournament provides structured competition against consistent opposition. Veterans and shared board codes add replay depth through persistent elements. As the game remains in pre-release with a planned playtest and demo, those interested in Slavic folklore and measured decision-making can follow its development for a closer look once the free demo arrives. The mechanics reward careful observation of opponents and festival timing over rapid reflexes.
