The Gunner's Campaign is a strategy and simulation game set during the Napoleonic Wars from 1805 to 1815. Players take direct control of artillery batteries on the PC, managing gun crews and fire control while larger armies maneuver independently across the battlefield.
Gameplay
Command centers on precise artillery operation without modern aids like targeting markers. A player selects a bearing and elevation, fires, and observes the impact of round shot that bounces on roads or stops in mud. Canister shot proves effective only at close range, and smoke from each salvo can obscure the next target.
Crew management forms the core loop. Four gunners handle sponging, loading, ramming, and priming for each shot. Casualties slow the rate of fire or silence the piece entirely. Rapid firing risks overheating the barrel, which can destroy ammunition or injure crew members when a round is rammed into a hot bore.
Opposing forces respond realistically. Enemy batteries adjust their aim shot by shot. Infantry advances in columns toward bayonet range, and cavalry threatens the flanks. Weather affects visibility and movement, with fog concealing terrain, rain turning ground to mud, and snow reducing overall pace.
Game Modes
The game offers twenty single-player missions divided into two career paths. The French route covers battles including Austerlitz, Jena, Eylau, Friedland, Aspern-Essling, Wagram, Borodino, Dresden, and Leipzig. The Allied route includes Vimeiro, Corunna, Talavera, Bussaco, Fuentes de Oñoro, Salamanca, Vitoria, Toulouse, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo.
Progression begins with a single gun. Successful performance leads to command of a section and then a full battery. Headquarters evaluates each battle based on orders followed, ammunition used, incidents of friendly fire, and guns kept operational. Strong records bring promotions and one of twenty historical decorations. Poor results result in reprimands or career termination.
Historical Setting and Mechanics
The simulation emphasizes period-accurate gunnery without abstracted systems. Armies operate autonomously, leaving the player responsible only for the battery's contribution to the outcome. Environmental factors integrate directly into ballistics and crew performance rather than serving as background elements.
Stylized 2D pixel art depicts the violence of Napoleonic combat, including cannon fire, musket volleys, charges, and fallen soldiers, presented without graphic detail or gore.
Is It Worth Playing?
The Gunner's Campaign targets players who enjoy methodical, detail-oriented strategy simulations focused on a single specialized role within larger historical conflicts. Its single-player structure and emphasis on crew drill, ranging by eye, and reactive enemy fire create a focused experience centered on artillery command during the Napoleonic era.
With a planned release in Q4 2026 and no reviews available yet, prospective players should consider their interest in historical accuracy and deliberate pacing. The game includes Steam achievements and supports family sharing, making it accessible for those drawn to its specific mechanics once it launches.
