About Torchline

Torchline - about the game

Torchline is a single-player strategy RPG adventure developed for PC. It combines turn-based combat with light management and party positioning in a world where the sun has failed to rise for twelve years. The story follows Erin, a young lantern keeper from the village of Harven, who carries the last true light in a torch after the Great Lantern begins to fail. Her journey leads east toward the Tower of the Sleeping Sun through varied landscapes including ashen wheatfields, birchwood, misty marshes, frozen passes, the salt coast, and the ash desert.

Gameplay

Combat revolves around a single torch that illuminates enemies. Only foes inside the light display their health bars and upcoming actions, while those in shadow appear as silhouettes. The companion holding the torch gains exclusive skills but draws the most enemy attention. Players can spend an action to pass the torch to an adjacent ally, shifting both power and threat dynamically during fights.

Four companions march in a straight line at all times. Skills activate only from specific positions and target limited ranges ahead or beside the formation. Repositioning through pushes, pulls, and swaps lets players disrupt enemy lines while protecting their own. Marks can be placed on the field and detonated later for area effects. When two companions stand side by side, they unlock team skills that combine their abilities for stronger results.

Progression occurs through a linear yet branching world. At each crossroads, players select one of several roads that lead to distinct lands, bosses, and potential new companions. Paths reconverge at the next settlement. Earlier roads can be revisited after the main story advances to confront previously bypassed bosses. Seven companions join Erin overall, with four active in the marching order at any time. Swaps happen at camps and inns between segments.

The tone stays wistful rather than grim. Creatures altered by the Long Night appear lost instead of purely malevolent. Defeated bosses return to their former states rather than dying. Side content includes campfire stories, small favors for villagers, and optional powerful foes found off the main routes.

Game Modes

Torchline offers a single continuous adventure structured around exploration and combat encounters. The branching road system creates replay paths without separate modes. Each playthrough involves managing the torch, adjusting the marching order, and choosing routes that alter available companions, bosses, and environments. The core loop repeats across acts, with roads from earlier acts remaining accessible later for additional challenges.

No separate multiplayer, versus, or endless modes appear in the game. All content centers on the single-player campaign with its formation-based tactics and light mechanics. Controller support allows full playthroughs using only a gamepad, while keyboard controls remain available as an alternative.

Story and World

The setting centers on the Long Night that began when the sun rose halfway over an eastern tower and then sank again. Harven sits at the western edge of the known world, its Great Lantern holding the final ember from that day. Erin's quest to relight the sun drives the narrative forward through encounters with villagers and the transformed creatures of the darkness. The journey passes through distinct regions that each introduce new environmental hazards and enemy types tied to the perpetual twilight.

Companions bring personal stories shared around campfires. Favors requested by villagers encountered along the roads add optional objectives that reward exploration without forcing completion. The overall structure keeps the focus on the party's four-person line and the torch's influence over visibility and power.

Is It Worth Playing?

Torchline suits players who enjoy tactical party management and positioning puzzles within a compact formation. The torch-passing system and position-restricted skills create frequent decisions about who holds the light and how the line shifts to reach key enemies. Branching roads encourage multiple runs to see different companions and bosses, while the ability to revisit earlier paths adds depth without requiring a new save file.

Full controller support and support for thirteen languages broaden accessibility. Twenty-eight Steam achievements provide clear goals for completionists. The indie scope keeps the experience focused on its core mechanics rather than sprawling systems. Those seeking deliberate, formation-driven combat in a quiet fantasy setting will find the mechanics rewarding through repeated play.
