About Twin Compass

Twin Compass - about the game

Twin Compass is a single-player roguelike deckbuilder that places every decision around a tarot-inspired card system with two distinct faces. Players choose between an Upright orientation that emphasizes defense, precision, and control or a Reversed orientation that favors risk, volatility, and personal cost. This choice directly influences a central Compass mechanic that tracks a balance between Resonance and Tension, creating a core loop where each play shifts the dial and shapes the run.

Gameplay

The central system revolves around a dial that ranges from deepest Resonance on one end to deepest Tension on the other. Playing Upright cards pulls the needle toward Resonance while Reversed cards push it toward Tension. Remaining near the center activates certain card rewards for balance, but extremes trigger a Compass Break that delivers either relief or consequence before resetting the dial to zero. This setup turns every card into two potential tools depending on orientation, encouraging players to read the current state of the run and commit to a direction.

Three distinct champions define starting approaches. The Seeker maintains balance and adapts builds to the unfolding situation. The Shadow operates with low health and high energy to end encounters quickly before personal resources become an issue. The Oracle favors high health and low energy, relying on a tightly curated deck and careful pacing. Each champion alters how the same card pool performs across runs.

Progression follows a structured climb through four Acts divided into thirteen Towers of ten floors each. Opposing forces occupy these stretches, including the Void, the Cult of the Dark Star, Chronos, and Chaos at the summit. Beyond the final confrontation lies an axis and a choice that determines whether the cycle continues. A catalog of 36 relics, a gold economy with shops, and random events introduce meaningful trade-offs that reward thoughtful deck construction and resource management.

Game Modes

Standard runs form the primary experience, allowing free selection of champion and progression through the full Tower structure at Ascension level zero. Daily and Weekly Trials operate on a shared seed that presents identical conditions to all players, supporting direct comparison of strategies and outcomes. Ascension levels from one through ten increase difficulty for those seeking greater challenge after mastering the base game.

These modes integrate directly with the card system and Compass dial. Shared-seed Trials highlight how different orientations and champion choices perform under fixed enemy and event layouts, while Ascension scaling tests the limits of deck synergy and resource decisions across repeated climbs.

Core Systems and Features

The complete card set includes the full 22 Major Arcana alongside 96 Minor Arcana cards across four suits, each carrying both Upright and Reversed versions. Relics earned during play provide persistent advantages that interact with the dial and champion abilities. A Bestiary populates as new enemies appear on specific floors, and a Codex records prior encounters and choices for reference across runs.

Controller support extends to full Steam Deck compatibility, with offline play available without any account requirements. Twenty-two achievements track mastery of specific mechanics, champions, and climb milestones. The overall structure draws from established roguelike deckbuilder conventions while emphasizing a measured, atmospheric pace centered on the Compass decisions.

Is It Worth Playing?

Twin Compass suits players who enjoy deliberate deckbuilding and mechanical depth over fast-paced action. The dual-face card system and Compass dial introduce a consistent layer of choice that differentiates runs even with the same champion and card pool. Early Access provides the complete four-Act structure, all cards, relics, and modes, with ongoing balance adjustments planned based on player data from shared-seed Trials.

Those who appreciate roguelike deckbuilders that reward reading the current state of a run and committing to a directional strategy will find the core loop engaging. The contemplative tone and focus on honest self-assessment through the dial set it apart within the genre, making it a strong fit for dedicated single-player strategy fans once Early Access begins.
