About Two-Dye

Two-Dye - about the game

Two-Dye is a casual indie 2D multiplayer hide-and-seek game built around painting mechanics on PC. Players blend into hand-drawn map environments by applying color from a paint kit, then remain motionless while others search. Matches support between 2 and 100 participants and emphasize timing, positioning, and restraint over direct confrontation.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on a preparation phase followed by an active hunt. Participants select a spot on the painted map, apply colors to match the surroundings, and wait for the round timer to begin. Seekers move through the environment looking for any movement or color mismatches. Success depends on choosing a location that matches the surrounding artwork closely and staying completely still once the hunt starts. The game includes an optional Lights Out setting that dims the environment and limits seekers to a single flashlight beam in most modes.

Host settings allow adjustments to timers, the number of seekers, painting restrictions, and other parameters before each session. Matches run through Steam lobbies that support invite-only, friends-only, or public access. The experience stays focused on observation and camouflage rather than combat or progression systems.

Game Modes

Five distinct modes shape the flow of each session. Paint & Seek serves as the primary format where designated hiders apply their camouflage before seekers attempt to locate everyone within the time limit. The Hunt begins with a small group of seekers and a larger group of hiders; anyone discovered switches to the seeker team, causing the active search force to grow. Free-for-All removes teams entirely so every participant both hides and searches while accumulating points through successful finds and taunts.

Turncoat introduces a mid-round option for hiders to switch sides and claim a bounty, which can shift alliances quickly. Gallery removes all seeking entirely; instead, everyone creates artwork on the maps, after which the group views the results and votes on the most effective camouflage and the strongest artistic entries. Each mode accepts the same host-configurable options for pacing and rules.

Maps and Community Content

Every playable area functions as a complete painting created by community members. The built-in Steam Workshop integration lets players browse new maps, download them directly, and upload their own creations with minimal steps. Maps continue to expand through ongoing contributions, giving hosts a growing selection of visual styles and layouts to choose from for different sessions.

Multiplayer Structure

Sessions run exclusively in multiplayer, with support for both online and LAN connections. Players decide the group size and privacy level when hosting, which influences how quickly lobbies fill and how the social dynamics play out across modes like Turncoat. The design keeps focus on repeated short rounds rather than long campaigns or single-player content.

Is It Worth Playing?

Two-Dye targets players who enjoy social deduction and creative hiding games in a relaxed setting. The painting system adds a distinctive layer to traditional hide-and-seek that rewards artistic eye and patience. With no reviews available prior to the planned August 2026 release, current interest rests on the described mechanics and the expanding map library through Workshop support. Those who prefer fast-paced action or solo experiences may find the emphasis on stillness and observation less engaging, while groups looking for customizable multiplayer sessions with friends will find the mode variety and host tools directly relevant. The game remains in a pre-release state with an active playtest option for those wanting early access to the systems.
