Unburied is an action strategy indie game set on PC where players defend against waves of the undead in a cycle of daytime preparation and nighttime survival. The core premise centers on stopping the procession of the Unburied King, whose march revives corpses across the land. Players take on the role of captains leading militia forces through top-down pixel art battlegrounds filled with grim folk horror elements, including a blood moon and varied enemy types such as singing mourners, wall-vaulting raiders, and siege engines like plague catapults and bone ballistas.
Gameplay
The gameplay loop divides each cycle into distinct day and night phases. During daylight hours, up to four players split up to gather scarce resources, scout terrain, and construct defenses including palisades, arrow towers, and campfires. Every placement requires careful decision-making because walls and structures directly influence the coming defense. At nightfall the horde advances, forcing the group to fall back and hold a defensive line shoulder to shoulder. The captain fights on the front line alongside the militia, issuing straightforward commands such as rally, hold, or attack. Success depends on surviving until sunrise, at which point an ember within each corpse causes the bodies to crumble to ash. All five classes operate at the front with abilities including warcries, charges, arrow storms, and frost orbs, and the militia responds to player orders. Between nights, roguelite progression appears through card selections that alter squad composition, skills, gear, and doctrine for the next vigil.
Game Modes
Unburied supports solo play or co-op with up to three additional players through open lobbies or room codes, with no friendship requirements and automatic pausing on disconnects. Difficulty adjusts based on party size. Specific encounters include The Bursting Front, where a bone colossus awakens on the third night and must be stopped before breaching the gate; The Blood-Moon Hunt, featuring directional hordes and bounty elites that players pursue while rescuing survivors; The Last March, in which the Unburied King rises personally at the altar; and The Eternal Night, an endless mode for climbing Vigil Ranks and testing sustained holds. Three chapters span a dozen battlegrounds along a funeral road, each with unique hordes and siege layouts. Story elements advance via interactions with lieutenant Holt and encountered survivors.
Progression and Customization
Persistent elements allow captains to grow across runs, with up to three captains per class that can be leveled independently. The keep serves as a hub for shaping forces through the Armory, where earned arms and relics in five quality tiers are stored and combined using bonds such as the Hearth Oath or Siege Compact. Squad Doctrine lets players select elite branches for militia lines before each battle. Ascension at the Heroes' Altar offers ten paths across the five classes, each granting a unique ultimate ability. Dawn Seals earned from survived nights unlock new tactics and rewards via the Watch Chronicle, while cards such as the Quartermaster provide supply bonuses. Every vigil, successful or failed, contributes to captain records so progress carries forward.
Is It Worth Playing?
Unburied targets players who enjoy co-op survival experiences that blend tower defense construction with roguelite decision-making and direct front-line combat. The day-night cycle creates clear tension between resource management and defensive execution, while the absence of barriers to co-op makes it accessible for both solo defenders and groups. With a planned release in Q4 2026 and no user reviews available yet, interested players can wishlist the title to receive notifications once it launches. Those drawn to grim pixel-art settings, persistent captain progression, and varied nightly encounters will find the described systems align closely with that preference. The game remains in development, so final balance and additional features will become clear after release.
