About Vestibule

Vestibule - about the game

Vestibule is a single-player roguelike deckbuilder that blends strategy mechanics with a doom metal theme. Players take control of a band performing across nine circles of Hell, where each performance turns into a fight against undead audiences and bosses. The core loop revolves around constructing a deck of cards, managing limited strikes per encounter, and chaining effects to deliver massive damage in one go.

Gameplay

Combat unfolds through a fixed number of strikes, typically four per fight. Players play cards beforehand to apply buffs, generate resources called embers, or provide utility. Once the strike activates, every band member attacks simultaneously, multiplying the effects of cards, artifacts, pedals, and any active riff chains into a single damage total. This system rewards careful planning over multiple turns of setup rather than reactive play.

Band building forms another key layer. Eighteen musicians fill nine distinct roles, each defined by keywords such as Frenzied, Blastbeat, Dissonance, Dirge, Anchor, and Trickster. These keywords stack and interact to shape how members perform. Most encounters follow straightforward patterns, but the third fight in each circle introduces a boss with unique mechanics, including one that revives after death, another that heals from played cards, and a final confrontation with multiple health bars.

Between fights, players visit a shop, make descent choices, or spend stash currency at a dealer for temporary items that carry risk. The descent follows Dante's nine circles in sequence: Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and Treachery, each containing three fights before the next boss. The soundtrack features original recorded doom metal tracks tailored to each circle.

Game Modes

Five starter decks provide distinct entry points. The Standard deck emphasizes balance and chain opportunities. The Shredder focuses on aggressive output. The Chaos deck randomizes its composition every run. The Engineer centers on duplicating cards. The Survivor grants each member an extra chance before defeat. Completing one deck unlocks the next.

Stakes increase difficulty progressively. Higher stakes raise enemy damage, increase shop costs, remove healing between fights, and eventually reduce available strikes to three per fight in the Demonic stake. These options create varied run structures without altering the fundamental single-player roguelike format.

The Descent and Progression

Each run follows a fixed nine-circle structure ending at Lucifer, who requires two phases and substantial health to defeat. Success rates remain low by design, positioning the final encounter as a deliberate challenge. Riff chains add hidden depth, as certain card combinations produce multipliers only when played in the same strike. A UI toggle exists for players who prefer explicit guidance over discovery.

Artifacts and pedals further customize runs alongside the deck. The early access version includes all nine circles, the full band roster, and the complete boss lineup already functional, with remaining work focused on balance and polish through additional playtesting.

Is It Worth Playing?

Vestibule suits players who enjoy roguelike deckbuilders that emphasize setup, multipliers, and high-stakes single runs over frequent saves or forgiving systems. The doom metal presentation and band-management theme provide a distinct flavor within the genre. Those who appreciate discovering synergies through play rather than menus will find the riff chains engaging. Early access status means the core experience stands complete while balance continues to refine. Fans of challenging roguelikes with thematic cohesion stand to gain the most from following its development toward the October 2026 launch.
