About Xanadu Next

Xanadu Next - about the game

Xanadu Next is an action RPG developed by Nihon Falcom that places players in control of a knight revived through ancient magic on the mysterious Harlech Island. The story follows the protagonist and scholar Charlotte L. Wells as they investigate the phantom Castle Strangerock, which appears and vanishes with the mist over Lake Orwell. This leads into the ruins of an ancient paradise called Xanadu, where players uncover fragments of its history through stone tablets and documents translated in real time by the companion character.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on real-time combat against monsters across an interconnected world map that links icy peaks, fiery caverns, waterways, forests, and magical ruins. Players explore a single large environment filled with secret passages, alternate routes, shortcuts, hidden items, and bosses. Combat involves standard attacks plus up to four equippable skills per character, which are acquired by repeatedly using specific weapons until proficiency reaches 100 percent for the initial unlock and 200 percent for permanent use even when the weapon is unequipped. Additional skills come from reading spellbooks, while passive abilities result from fusing with Guardians. Players can level down to adjust stats and carve keys from monster bones to manage inventory costs. Exploration rewards players with pieces of the island's backstory involving magic, war, an ancient dragon, and the Black Bride.

Game Modes

Xanadu Next offers a single-player experience with no separate multiplayer modes or distinct game variants. All progression, combat, and exploration occur within one continuous campaign that encourages repeated visits to areas as new abilities and routes open up. The structure rewards thorough mapping of the island and its ruins without branching campaigns or competitive elements.

Progression and Systems

Weapon use drives skill acquisition and power growth, creating incentive to switch armaments frequently even when stronger options appear. Stat redistribution through level-down mechanics allows experimentation with builds, while Guardian fusions add lasting passive effects. The translation system for ancient texts integrates directly into exploration, revealing lore without interrupting play. These elements combine to support varied approaches to combat and navigation across the full map.

Atmosphere and Presentation

Visuals adopt a gritty medieval style with 3D environments that emphasize subtle details across varied biomes. The soundtrack, composed by Falcom's Sound Team jdk, maintains a foreboding tone suited to the isolated island setting. The overall presentation draws from classic dungeon RPG influences while delivering a cohesive world that feels organic as players uncover connections between regions.

Is It Worth Playing?

Player reception remains positive years after the 2016 PC release, with Steam user reviews rated Very Positive based on hundreds of submissions. Reviewers highlight the addictive combat loop, satisfying exploration, and strong atmosphere as standout qualities. The game suits those who enjoy methodical action RPGs focused on interconnected worlds, weapon mastery, and gradual story revelation through environmental details. It delivers consistent pacing for players comfortable with older-style progression systems that include some grinding for proficiency gains. Availability on PC makes it accessible for fans of Falcom's action RPG catalog or similar exploration-heavy titles.
