Hogwarts Legacy PC System Requirements

The game Hogwarts Legacy ranks among the most resource-intensive titles in recent memory, while also delivering stunning visuals. Features like vast castle interiors, mystical environments, and spell effects can strain even powerful graphics cards. Players should verify their computer's capabilities before diving in with the first spell. This piece outlines the complete specifications, useful insights on graphics cards, and performance enhancement strategies.

Minimum System Requirements for Hogwarts Legacy

Developed by Avalanche Software in Salt Lake City, Hogwarts Legacy launched on February 10, 2023. The official minimum specs include: Intel Core i5-6600 processor at 3.3 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 at 3.2 GHz, 16 GB of RAM, GeForce GTX 960 with 4 GB or Radeon RX 470 with 4 GB, DirectX 12, 85 GB of storage space, and Windows 10 64-bit. The game has sold over 24 million copies, making it the top-selling title of 2023 by revenue, with 1 billion dollars earned in just two weeks.

These specs represent the baseline. With the minimum setup, expect 720p resolution at 30 frames per second on low settings. Developers list support for HDDs, but in reality, traditional hard drives lead to severe frame drops when loading textures. An SSD is essentially required even for basic play.

The 16 GB RAM threshold is high but reasonable. The open world, texture streaming, and numerous on-screen elements can consume up to 12 GB of system memory. Attempting the game with 8 GB will result in performance issues starting in areas like the Great Hall.

The recommended specs target 1080p resolution at a steady 60 frames per second on high settings. They call for an Intel Core i7-8700 at 3.2 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 at 3.6 GHz, 16 GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, or Intel Arc A770. Here, an SSD is a must, not just a suggestion.

The shift from GTX 960 in the minimum requirements to GTX 1080 Ti for recommended highlights the game's demands at higher quality levels. Note that these specs are for 1080p; scaling to 1440p or 4K could require up to 80% more graphics processing power.

Hogwarts Legacy with Ray Tracing

Ray tracing in Hogwarts Legacy offers mixed results for players. On one hand, it enhances reflections in water, polished floors in the Great Hall, and window effects at Hogwarts. On the other, enabling it reduces frame rates by 35-50% compared to standard rendering.

Official requirements do not specify a separate profile for ray tracing. In practice, for 1080p with ray tracing, at least an RTX 3070 or RX 6800 XT is needed. For 1440p with ray tracing, an RTX 4070 or RTX 4070 Ti works. At 4K with ray tracing, even an RTX 4090 struggles to maintain 60 frames per second, while an RTX 5090 with 32 GB GDDR7 provides smooth gameplay using DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation.

Ray tracing in the game mainly covers reflections and ambient occlusion. The impact is noticeable but not transformative, particularly outside Hogwarts. If a graphics card barely handles regular rendering, it's best to keep ray tracing off for better performance.

Which Graphics Card Can Run Hogwarts Legacy?

Specific performance scenarios follow.

GTX 1080 Ti serves as the baseline for enjoyable 1080p gameplay, delivering 45-60 frames per second on Medium/High settings. Below this, maintaining smooth frames becomes challenging, especially in crowded Hogsmeade or open areas.

RTX 3060 with 12 GB of VRAM-the key distinction from the 8 GB version-supports comfortable 1080p Ultra at 60 frames per second. With DLSS Quality, 1440p becomes viable. This card offers strong value, particularly for used models.

RTX 4070 marks the start of optimal experiences: 1080p Ultra at 80-100 frames per second, and 1440p High/Ultra above 60 frames per second. Using DLSS 3 Quality, ray tracing can be added without losing smoothness. The RTX 4070 Super, released in January 2024, provides a 5-10% performance boost at a similar price point.

For AMD cards, RX 5700 XT matches the recommended level with 1080p High at 60 frames per second. RX 6700 XT with 12 GB VRAM offers extra headroom, handling 1080p Ultra and possibly 1440p with FSR. RX 7800 XT delivers smooth 1440p Ultra using FSR 3 Frame Generation. AMD options without ray tracing provide better performance per dollar in this game.

How to Optimize Hogwarts Legacy?

At launch, the game did not exemplify efficient performance, but updates in 2023-2024 have improved matters significantly. Certain settings still warrant adjustment to maximize frame rates without noticeable quality loss.

DLSS for NVIDIA, FSR for AMD and others, or XeSS for Intel represent the top tools available. DLSS Quality on RTX cards produces visuals nearly identical to native 1440p while boosting frames by 30-40%. FSR 2.0/3.0 is compatible with all cards. For RTX 40/50 series, DLSS 3 or 4 with Frame Generation can effectively double frame rates.

Shadows are the primary drain on performance. Dropping from Ultra to High yields 5-8% more frames, and to Medium, up to 15-20%. Visually, the gap between High and Ultra is slight, with Medium still appearing acceptable. Volumetric effects, such as fog and light rays, follow a similar pattern, offering nearly the same look at Medium for half the cost in performance.

Drawing distance for vegetation and view range are additional settings to consider reducing. At Ultra, the game processes foliage at excessive distances, mainly taxing the CPU. At Medium, differences are imperceptible during actual play.

Finally, on a critical note, an SSD is essential. This stems from the engine's design, not tweaks. On an HDD, texture streaming causes hitches regardless of GPU or CPU strength. An NVMe SSD Gen3 or faster is advised for 4K texture sets. Ideally, 16 GB of VRAM suits 1440p Ultra with ray tracing; 12 GB is the limit, while 8 GB forces texture reductions to High.

About the Game

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action RPG set in the 19th-century Harry Potter universe, a century before the books' events. Players take on the role of a Hogwarts student uncovering an ancient threat to the wizarding world. Exploration includes a castle with over 200 unique rooms, caring for magical creatures like Mooncalfs, Nifflers, and Hippogriffs, brewing potions, and mastering more than 30 spells.

The combat system integrates various magic schools: control-based like Wingardium Leviosa, offensive such as Bombarda and Avada Kedavra, and defensive including Protego. The main story takes 30-35 hours to complete, with 100% completion around 70 hours or more. A sequel, Hogwarts Legacy 2, is in development at Warner Bros. Games. The game is available on PS5, Xbox Series, PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with the latter's 2023 port featuring significant graphical compromises.
