Combat Mission: Red Thunder - Battle Pack 1 is a strategy expansion for the PC wargame that focuses on Soviet offensives in eastern Poland during the summer of 1944. It adds historical content centered on German defensive actions against advancing Soviet forces from the 2nd White Russian Front and elements of the 1st Guards Tank Army.
Gameplay
The Battle Pack emphasizes tactical command of combined arms forces in detailed battles set in the late summer of 1944. Players direct units such as infantry, armored vehicles, and support elements across maps that recreate terrain from eastern Poland. The included content highlights the use of German SPW armored personnel carriers, with dedicated training scenarios to practice their employment in varied situations. Larger engagements feature heavy tanks like the King Tiger during its combat debut on the Eastern Front.
Scenarios range from small platoon actions to battalion-level fights on maps up to 12 kilometers across. The two campaigns provide structured sequences of missions that reflect historical operations, including branches that allow different paths through the same overall timeframe. All content supports play against the AI or in direct head-to-head matches.
Game Modes
Standalone scenarios form the core of the Battle Pack, with thirteen individual battles designed for flexible play. These cover platoon to battalion scales and include three training-focused scenarios centered on German SPW tactics. The two campaigns deliver longer experiences: Five Days One Summer spans six missions with up to four branches for a total of thirteen possible missions, following II./SS-Pz.Rgt. 5 and III Germania of Kampfgruppe Mühlenkamp from July 16 to 22, 1944. Tigers at Ogledow recreates the August 1944 actions around the Baranov Bridgehead involving schwere Panzer-Abteilung 501.
Thirteen new Master Maps accompany the missions and can be used to create additional custom battles. Every scenario and campaign supports both singleplayer against the AI and multiplayer head-to-head competition.
Historical Setting and Units
The Battle Pack places players in the role of German forces attempting to blunt Soviet spearheads during a period of intense fighting in eastern Poland. It incorporates specific unit types and equipment relevant to the timeframe, such as the early deployment of King Tigers against Soviet tank armies. The scenarios and campaigns draw from documented engagements without altering core mechanics of the base game.
Is It Worth Playing?
This Battle Pack suits players who already own Combat Mission: Red Thunder and seek additional historical content focused on 1944 Eastern Front actions. The campaigns and scenarios provide structured play with branching options in one case and well-known tank engagements in the other. Standalone battles offer variety from small to large scales, including training tools for specific vehicle types. The expansion works for both solo AI opponents and direct multiplayer matches. Those interested in detailed tactical simulations of late-war German defensive operations will find the added missions and maps extend the available options in a focused way.
