About Steel Division 2 - History Pass

Steel Division 2 - History Pass - about the game

Steel Division 2 - History Pass is a real-time strategy and simulation title for PC that expands the core experience of large-scale World War II battles with three dedicated History Expansions focused on the Eastern Front.

Gameplay

Battles unfold in real time across detailed maps scaled to realistic proportions. Players construct decks of units drawn from specific divisions and deploy them in timed phases that progress from early reconnaissance and light forces through mid-battle reinforcements to late-game heavy armor and artillery. The four-phase structure governs when different categories of troops become available, forcing careful planning around arrival times and map control.

Each engagement emphasizes combined arms tactics. Infantry, tanks, artillery, and aircraft interact through line-of-sight rules, armor penetration calculations, and suppression mechanics. Recon units spot hidden threats while engineers build or clear obstacles. The History Pass additions introduce new nations with fully voiced voice lines, unique weapon sets, and vehicles such as the Finnish BT-42 assault gun, the Romanian Vanatorul de Care R-35 tank destroyer, and the German Sturmtiger. These units integrate into existing deck-building systems while adding fresh options for flanking, anti-tank work, and air support.

Strategic layers sit above the tactical fights. The Army General mode operates on a turn-based map where players manage supply lines, assign divisions to sectors, and launch offensives across campaigns that can span dozens of kilometers. Expansions add one or two new Army General campaigns per pack, including operations along the Vistula river, in Finnish forests, and across Romanian frontiers.

Game Modes

Skirmish allows solo or cooperative play against AI opponents on any map with full deck customization. Historical Battles restrict both sides to divisions and force compositions that match documented engagements, increasing difficulty through limited options and fixed starting conditions.

Conquest mode features two variants. The Eastern Front version emphasizes wide-front advances and flanking maneuvers across large maps, while Closer Combat focuses on tighter engagements with more emphasis on urban and forested terrain. Breakthrough mode places one side in a prepared defensive posture with fortifications and bunkers against an attacking force that must break through successive lines.

Multiplayer supports up to ten players per side in matches that combine the same phase-based deployment and deck rules. Cooperative options extend to most modes, letting teams share command of divisions or campaign objectives. The History Pass content adds new scenarios to these modes, each playable alone or with others, and introduces additional camouflages and minor mechanics tied to the new nations and units.

Expansions and New Content

The History Pass bundles three expansions that collectively add multiple nations, including Finnish and Romanian forces alongside Polish partisan units. Each expansion contributes four to six new divisions, among them the Finnish Panssaridivisioona, the German 5. SS-Panzerdivision Wiking, the Soviet 3-ya VDV paratroopers, and the Romanian 1 Blindata armored division.

Hundreds of new units and weapons appear across the packs. Notable examples include the multi-turreted T-28 tank, the ISU-122S self-propelled gun, the VL Myrsky fighter, the Polikarpov I-153 biplane, and the IAR-80M. Special aces accompany several of these additions, bringing unique unit variants such as the captured Polish-operated Jagdpanzer 38(t) known as Chwat.

New Army General campaigns and standalone historical scenarios place these forces in context. Players can fight through Finnish woodland defenses, contest Polish river crossings, or operate near the Romanian frontier. All new content integrates directly into the existing deck and phase systems without altering core rules.

Is It Worth Playing?

Steel Division 2 with the History Pass suits players who enjoy detailed, large-scale World War II strategy that blends real-time tactical decisions with turn-based operational planning. The phase-based deployment and deck construction reward preparation and adaptation across varied terrain and force compositions. Those seeking quick matches may find the scale and learning curve demanding, while enthusiasts of historical accuracy and combined-arms combat will appreciate the depth added by the new nations, divisions, and campaigns.

Regular patches continue to address balance and stability years after release, maintaining active multiplayer and skirmish communities. The expansions expand replayability through additional divisions and scenarios that integrate seamlessly with the base systems. Players interested in methodical, simulation-oriented strategy rather than fast-paced action will find the most consistent value in the combined package.
