About Cardpocalypse

Cardpocalypse - about the game

Cardpocalypse is an indie RPG that blends deck-building card battles with a narrative set in a 1990s elementary school. Players step into the shoes of 10-year-old Jess, who accidentally gets the popular Mega Mutant Power Pets card game banned on her first day at Dudsdale Elementary. This forces the kids to play in secret while mutants from the game begin crossing into the real world. The core loop revolves around exploring the school, completing quests, collecting cards and stickers, and building decks to defeat these invaders and restore order.

Gameplay

The gameplay centers on constructing decks around ultra-rare Champion cards, each tied to one of four animal factions. These Champions start with 30 health points and unique abilities that shape the entire deck strategy. Matches end when one Champion's health reaches zero. When a Champion drops to half health, it evolves into its Mega form, gaining increased attack power and new abilities that shift the momentum of the fight.

Players earn cards through quests and trades with classmates, but every exchange is permanent with no backsies allowed. Stickers provide upgrades and mutations to individual cards, while house rules can be selected or altered during play to introduce new conditions. The Mega Mutant Power Magazine allows creation of entirely new cards, though all modifications remain fixed once applied. Exploration of Dudsdale Elementary uncovers side quests that reward candy, stickers, and additional cards, encouraging careful resource management and deck experimentation in a single-player campaign.

Game Modes

The main experience unfolds through a choice-driven story campaign where players navigate school life, build alliances, and confront the mutant threat. Deck construction happens between encounters, with opportunities to wager cards or adjust rules on the fly. Permanent alterations to cards and rules mean each playthrough develops a distinct collection and playstyle.

Gauntlet Mode serves as a separate roguelike experience added after launch. In this mode, players select a Champion and progress through increasingly difficult battles. After each victory, new cards, rules, and rewards are drafted to expand the deck. Runs emphasize building powerful combos under escalating challenges, with every attempt featuring unique elements based on draft choices.

Story and Setting

The narrative captures the feel of growing up in the 1990s through references to floppy disks, magazine cheat codes, and schoolyard culture. Jess and her friends must balance card battles with everyday elementary school troubles while uncovering the source of the mutant invasion. Choices during deck building and rule changes influence both combat effectiveness and story progression, creating a personal version of the card collection by the end.

Trade mechanics and quest rewards reinforce the theme of limited resources and tough decisions. Not every card can be obtained in a single run, pushing players to prioritize upgrades and alliances carefully.

Is It Worth Playing?

Cardpocalypse suits players who enjoy single-player deck-building RPGs with strong narrative elements and permanent progression choices. The combination of story-driven exploration and tactical card matches provides consistent engagement across the campaign. Gauntlet Mode adds replayability for those interested in roguelike drafting and combo experimentation.

Reception highlights the charm of the 1990s setting and the satisfying evolution of Champions during battles. The absence of multiplayer keeps the focus on solo progression and experimentation. Those who appreciate games where decisions carry lasting weight and where deck variety emerges from limited resources will find the experience rewarding. The game remains available as a complete package with its added mode included at no extra cost.
