About OVERPAINT

OVERPAINT - about the game

Overpaint is a casual indie multiplayer game centered on competitive painting sessions with friends or strangers. Players recreate public domain masterpieces on individual canvases while dealing with timed phases of sabotage and repair. The experience blends creative brushwork with light physical interference in a shared space, all wrapped in short matches that last around five minutes.

Gameplay

Matches begin with players positioned back to back, each working on their own canvas to match the same reference painting as closely as possible. The core loop involves applying brushstrokes to build up the image, with accuracy determining the winner at the end. A key twist arrives during Sabotage Time, when participants leave their seats to approach others' canvases and throw paint, disrupting progress. Defending your own work requires grabbing and pushing away intruders before they can cause too much damage. Once sabotage ends, Repair Time begins, allowing focused painting to recover from any interference without further attacks possible. The session concludes when the in-game sun sets, wrapping up the match.

Controls emphasize direct interaction with the canvas and environment. Painting uses standard brush tools, while sabotage involves movement and physical actions like throwing paint or repelling others. The system supports both online and offline play against bots, making it accessible for solo practice or group sessions without requiring constant internet connectivity.

Game Modes

Versus play includes Random Match for pairing with strangers and Room Match for inviting friends via a code, supporting two to four participants. Both versus options allow solo play against bots for offline sessions. Studio mode removes all timers, ranking, and sabotage elements, focusing purely on relaxed painting at an individual pace without competition or time pressure.

These modes form the current Early Access lineup, with developers planning further refinements based on player input during the two-month period leading to full release. Matches draw from a selection of public-domain artworks rendered in anime style for the competitive rounds, while originals remain available for selection in room-based or studio sessions.

Paintings and Creative Elements

The game features recognizable public-domain masterpieces that players recreate through their own brushwork. Anime-style interpretations serve as the active references during matches, adding a distinct visual flair. Participants can switch to the classic versions in non-competitive settings for a different approach to the same subjects. This setup encourages repeated play as players refine techniques across varied artworks and match conditions.

Early Access includes core paintings and stages, with plans to expand the library through updates driven by community feedback. The emphasis stays on the act of painting itself rather than complex progression systems.

Is It Worth Playing?

Overpaint suits players seeking short, social sessions that mix creativity with playful disruption. The sabotage and repair phases introduce tension and strategy without overwhelming the painting focus, appealing to casual groups or those who enjoy light competitive multiplayer. Solo options via bots or Studio mode provide a low-pressure alternative for practice or relaxation.

As an Early Access title scheduled for full release on October 30, 2026, the game currently offers the listed modes with ongoing tuning expected. No user reviews are available yet, so expectations should align with a work-in-progress multiplayer experience. Those interested in unique painting mechanics and quick matches with friends or online opponents will find the core loop engaging, while others may prefer to wait for post-Early Access stability and added content.
