Two of the best Call of Duty games ever made are finally heading to PlayStation, and it looks like the wait is nearly over. Treyarch has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are getting ported to PS4 and PS5 this July, and fresh activity behind the scenes suggests the launch is right around the corner.
Here's the tell: both games were quietly pushed to version 1.03 on PS5, with the updates logged in just the past day or so. No public patch notes, which is exactly what you'd expect from a game that hasn't come out yet. Storefronts don't refresh dormant listings for fun, so when a couple of unreleased ports suddenly jump a version number overnight, that's usually the sound of a release date warming up.
Let's set expectations first. These are straight ports handled by Iron Galaxy, not remasters. So don't go in dreaming of ray tracing, reworked lighting or a fresh coat of 2026 paint. What you do get is the full package: campaign, multiplayer and Zombies, all intact, running natively on modern PlayStation hardware. For Black Ops 2 especially, that multiplayer and the still-brilliant branching campaign is a big deal.
Black Ops 2 is the one a lot of people are really here for. That near-future 2025 setting, the Strike Force missions, the choices that actually changed your ending, and a Zombies mode people still talk about... it holds up shockingly well for a 2012 game. Getting it back on a current console without messing around with backwards compatibility quirks is genuinely exciting.
Before anyone panics: there's no separate Xbox release planned, and there doesn't need to be. Both games already run on Xbox One and Series X|S through backwards compatibility, so this whole thing is really about giving PlayStation players the same easy access. Fair enough.
No firm date has been locked in yet, just a July window, but with those version 1.03 updates going live, we'd be surprised if we're waiting much longer. If you skipped these back in the day, or you just want an excuse to replay one of the strongest one-two punches in the series, this is shaping up to be a good month.
Which one are you jumping into first, the original or Black Ops 2? Drop it in the comments.
