About Colonial Conquest

Colonial Conquest - about the game

Colonial Conquest is a turn-based strategy and simulation game set during the Victorian era of global expansion and conflict from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Players take control of one of six major powers and compete to dominate the world map through military campaigns, economic management, and covert operations.

Gameplay

The core loop revolves around seasonal turns that advance the game year by year. Each turn includes a build phase limited to spring, followed by movement and combat phases that occur every season. In the build phase, players construct armies and navies at supply centers, fortify units, provide economic aid to allies or neutral territories, gather intelligence through espionage, and attempt subversion to weaken or seize control of minor nations.

Movement allows armies to advance only into adjacent regions while navies transport troops for amphibious assaults or patrol sea zones. Combat resolves in up to twenty rounds per engagement, beginning with naval exchanges if fleets are present and then shifting to land battles. Victory points accumulate from captured regions, which also generate income. Regions start with hidden values that become known only after conquest or successful spying, and minor countries defend most territories until influenced or defeated.

The six playable major powers are Great Britain, Germany, France, the United States, Japan, and Russia. Each begins with defined home territories in the historical scenarios, and the map contains roughly 130 regions available for expansion. Economic decisions such as lending funds directly affect treasury reserves and the ability to field larger forces over time.

Game Modes

Three scenarios structure play. The 1880 scenario uses historical starting positions, the 1914 scenario reflects the eve of global conflict with corresponding territorial control, and the standard scenario begins around 1870 in a non-historical free-for-all where powers hold only their core lands. Players can compete against the AI in single-player matches or engage in hotseat multiplayer with up to six participants, including an optional time limit of four minutes per turn to keep sessions moving.

Additional options include shared or split-screen support and remote play together features for local or connected sessions. Games continue until a player reaches a preset victory point threshold or holds the highest total at the end of the scenario, depending on custom settings chosen before starting.

Key Mechanics and Systems

Espionage reveals approximate army strengths, regional income, and victory point values, though reports carry a margin of inaccuracy. Subversion uses treasury resources to bribe minor country forces, either reducing their defensive strength or triggering a coup that transfers control outright. Economic aid can bolster allies or accelerate minor nation army production, adding layers of diplomatic maneuvering alongside direct conquest.

Supply centers serve as primary production hubs and remain fortified by default. Naval units enable global reach for amphibious operations, while land forces handle territorial grabs. The interplay between visible military strength and hidden information from spying creates opportunities for calculated risks and surprise maneuvers.

Is It Worth Playing?

Colonial Conquest delivers a focused grand strategy experience centered on world conquest with integrated economic and espionage systems. Its straightforward phase structure and Risk-like territorial control appeal to players who prefer accessible turns over deep simulation complexity. The game supports both solo campaigns against AI opponents and hotseat sessions with friends.

Reception on major platforms stands at mixed levels, with many reviewers noting its addictive quality for short to medium sessions and its success in capturing the era's expansionist feel without overwhelming detail. It remains available for PC play with no ongoing seasonal content or major updates since its original release. Those seeking a lightweight yet strategic title set in the colonial period will find the verified mechanics rewarding, particularly if they enjoy managing multiple power levers across a global map.
