About Tears of Avia

Tears of Avia - about the game

Tears of Avia is a turn-based strategy RPG set on the war-torn world of Estera. Players select one of five Seekers to lead a party of characters drawn from five core classes, then explore ancient ruins, forests, and settlements while making decisions that shape both the story and the relationships within the group.

Gameplay

The core loop centers on party management and tactical combat. After choosing a Seeker such as the honourable Kai, the sceptical hunter Reina, the confident Iris, the gentle Momoko, or the fist-focused Raul, players recruit additional members who fill the roles of Ranger, Warrior, Mage, Brawler, or Priest. Each character possesses individual levelling trees and skill upgrades that allow extensive customization.

Combat unfolds on grid-based maps where players position units and activate abilities each turn. Skills can be combined to trigger status effects including burn, freeze, stun, and cripple, while defensive options such as retaliation, redirects, and immunities help protect the party. The unique skill sets of different party members mean that the same encounter can play out differently depending on the chosen roster.

Exploration takes players through hand-illustrated environments that include dense woods, bustling towns, forgotten tombs, the Tower of the Ancients, and the harsh lands of Arralash. Movement between these locations advances the main quest while providing opportunities to gather resources and recruit new allies.

Game Modes

Tears of Avia offers a single-player campaign driven by a branching narrative. Players progress through story missions that incorporate choice-based decisions, with outcomes influenced by the moral alignments and backgrounds of party members. Because the world is divided between the military city-state of Tirig, which reveres the gods, and the northern heretic stronghold of Helmgar, party composition can lead to internal conflicts that affect dialogue and mission results.

There are no separate multiplayer or competitive modes. All gameplay occurs within the main campaign structure, where tactical battles serve the overarching story of uncovering secrets in long-abandoned ancient cities.

Story and World

Estera once thrived but now suffers from ongoing conflict between its two major powers. The narrative follows the chosen Seeker as the party investigates the ruins of past civilizations and confronts the consequences of their actions. Decisions made during missions can shift alliances, alter character relationships, and determine the final fate of the land, sometimes producing outcomes that feel at odds with what the world might deserve.

Character backstories and class identities add depth to these choices. Warriors and Brawlers bring frontline strength, while Mages, Rangers, and Priests provide ranged support and healing. When characters from opposing sides of the war travel together, their differing views surface in conversations and can influence how events unfold.

Is It Worth Playing?

Tears of Avia appeals most to players who enjoy methodical party building and turn-based tactics with meaningful choices. The skill combination system and branching story provide replay value for those willing to experiment with different Seekers and class mixes. Combat rewards careful planning around status effects and synergies rather than raw power.

Reception has been mixed, with praise directed at the depth of the customization options and the interesting premise, while criticism often focuses on pacing, visual presentation, and occasional lack of polish in execution. The game suits fans of tactical RPGs who prioritize strategic depth over high production values or frequent updates. Those seeking polished visuals or additional modes beyond the core campaign may find the experience limited. Availability remains on PC through standard digital storefronts, with no ongoing seasonal content or major post-launch expansions confirmed in recent years.
